Sep-22-01, 09:10 AM (EDT) "Operational speed question?" Hi Folks,I was wondering if you should slow down to 15 - 20 mph when a track narrows from two lines to one?In other words, there is a switch and the train moves to a single line. Some activities seem to expect you to maintain the line speed like 40 or 50 mph and I do notice that the train does not derail.bob Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-22-01, 09:47 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Operational speed question?" Bob ,Some switches are made for high-speed crossings. Others don't.
If you have to cross a low-speed switch ; you will always be informed with a speed-limit.E.g. : your speed-reference of a track is 100 mph (160 km/h). On this track you have 2 switches : the first of 100 mph (160 km/h) , the second of 30 mph (50 km/h). The first have no speed-limit , the second have a speed-limit which will be informed with a signal to give you the opportunity to brake your train to the requested speed-limit. Is your speed higher than the requested one , you will derail (speed +15 mph).I'm a lokomotive engineer (freight-trains) with the Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB). In Belgium , we use the same system with the speed-limits. In reality you will not derail if your requested speed-limit is a little higher (+ 5 mph)on the switch.
But it is forbidden !!! Even , we can get a penalty for this minor mistake. You will derail if you use only the dynamic break , even the speed is LOWER then the requested speed. To brake a train with freight-cars : use the train brake. You can also damage the locomotive-wheels when you use only the lokomotive brakes to stop a freight-train.Tom.
