LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-03 AT 05:43 AM (EDT)

The production staff at the North American (Virtual) Locomotive Works takes great pride in announcing the immediate release of the definitive upgrade to the Rolling Stock for the North East Corridor.
This package contains 8 assorted AEM7s/ALP44 and 48 Amfleet cars in several different paint schemes. It will also upgrade your passenger car external sounds and replace the default Amfleet textures in your Metroliner and HHP folders. As an added bonus the installer will replace the default Metroliner with a much more accurate E60c by Jens-Chris Baerenz. Subsequent mega packs will build on this base by adding E60s and replacing the horrible Kuju models of the HHP and Acela express with realistic models by Tolaris and Tom Caine....
Enjoy and let the games (or activity makers if you will) begin...Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 1Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 2Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 3Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 4Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 5Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 6Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 7Chuck Schneider

Not at the file library yet!

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-03 AT 07:52 AM (EDT)

Good morning!@ NALW: Thank you for your excellent work. I have a certain feeling about the nodes being busy for the next few days. *Looks at Premium Membership receit - and grins* Those juicers will add a more than welcome diversity from the plethora of Gaz Guzzlers in the library @ Stoooopid Person (did I miss an "o"?) Wait for the library to be updated. Happens inbetween 15:00 and 16:00 Zulu (GMT) each day, unless Nels is distracted or busy with more important things such as a live (his good right!)AEM, we have been teased and we've been waiting for many weeks, so this few additional hours/minutes until the lib is updated will be 'nuthing. Cheers *rubs his hands*Lukas a.k.a Swissie

I guess your initial mail involuntarily went into said direction, and I couldn't resist "pulling the brakes" on you. But let's turn to the good news: It's there, it's there now... Go for it! Jake,Try them out in an activity or two...Sufice it to say that they are well lit! Some cute door lites on the Amcans that indicate Door open, Closing and Closed and go out when locked.... All controlled by the headlight switch since Kuju didn't give us any other options.
The doors open and close on the NEC versions of the Amfleet Is and are not animated on the others.... So you can use them after your F40s and Genesis Engines....FWIW, we are well on our way to ethnically purging the sim. of Kuju supplied (you should only laugh) Rolling Stock....Wait for NEC PACK #2 coming up very shortly....
E60s, HHP8 replacements, Acela Express replacements and Horizons...

Or maybe they could hire some PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPERS like, I don't know, say Train Artisan to show up them up for a singular lack of artistic talent or maybe AURAN can give them some lessons on Project Management and Quality Control??????? Or then again Microsoft could fire their sorry butts and bring it in house... And Kuju could go back to porting Pong to Commodore 86s or whatever the do best (if anything)!
(This would be my recommendation if asked as $Bill has demonstrated time and again that he and his team have got the Build - Distribute - Support Software equation down pat!)
IMHO that would produce the same results that they got when they did the same to Flight Simulator... (Its a thing of beauty now, It just works and there is still plenty of room for Freeware and Payware developers)(Only don't buy Kuju like they did Bruce Artwick and unlike Artwick and Company; IMHO Kuju has demonstrated absolutely no expertise or aptitude in the Gaming Software development Industry)}>Chuck Schneider

MSTS GREMLINS AFOOT!!!

Off course they would fine ME!!!OK does anyone know why...1. I can't seem to get up to speed. I checked brake etc. It took me about 15 minutes to just to reach 80 on the NEC with 5 Amfleet cars.2. I got an SMS file error when I started the sime, something about common sound. (I have the other NALW packs with no problemsAnyone tell me if I goofed up or is there a bug afoot...Again this is not a complaint by any means...the models are the best out there...I am going right back to run mine again...Thanks!BobFlorida Railfan Page

Well I think I figured out two of them...1. when I go into emergency..it never completly recovers. This is on Egine 8432. The sms file error is for an E60....I have E60's in a static consists in on activity. I wonder if something in the NALW pack is making the E60 think there is a SMS file missing. GREAT STUFF!! RE: MSTS GREMLINS AFOOT!!!

Ok Thanks...One other REALLY wierd thing has happenedOn a run with the AEM-7 I experianced NEC V.4 meltdown. Suddenly shapes failed to load and like something out of the Twilight Zone little bits of the world began to go away. Then I got the dreaded send don't send. (it was wierd watching track vanish but keep running. I then went into route riter and it detected no problems (?). I then ran another run with the Acela and did not encounter the same problem. My plans are to reinstall the AEM-7's and see what happens and also I have the NEC 4 so I can re install it if needed. ALso I noticed that sparks where the pantgraph meets the wire. THAT is really cool! Great detail. Anyway I am going to play with this a bit and see what I can sort out. Of course I am open to any ideas and suggetsions. (And yes I have a good top of the line machine). Thanks!BobFlorida Railfan Page

In regards to that patch....If anyone has created a consist that crashes MSTS or the AE, delete that consist, install this patch when it becomes available, and re-build it. The patch cannot fix existing consist problems, but it will prevent them from happening again! Or if you do not want to wait, delete the consist, go back into the consist editor, and Scroll down past the 50-or-so entries of the same 4 default-replacement cars (also fixed in this patch), and choose from the 43 cars that start with "AmfleetI". This problem does not affect them.Or, if you are really attached to your consist or don't want any errors at all, TODAY and TOMORROW ONLY, Buzz will fix YOUR consists FREE OF CHARGE! Limited time offer! Act now! LOL!!
Just send the .con file to buzzbenz@msn.com and i'll fix it up and return it ASAP!------ BUZZ ------

It is nothing to do with Conbuilder.........The files referred to above do not exist after the pack installation - the reason you don't get an error is probably because you have the files on your computer.x_PS_Random4.wav, x_PS_Random5.wav, x_PS_Random6.wav & x_PS_Random7.wav are there
but not x_PS_Random2.wav & x_PS_Random3.wavAnyway if conbuilder was at fault why not make all the aliases an error except just these two? There are several other errors in this pack also - some may have been corrected by the patch - have yet to check what has been included.Laurie Whelan

Laurie Whelan is correct. The files x_PS_Random2.wav & x_PS_Random3.wav in the NEC_ELECTRIC sound folder and are being called by the E60Ceng.sms file. Hope you can post them soon.Unless there is not supposed to be an E60Ceng.sms because there is no E60Ccab.sms file.Richard

I installed Patch #4 so I hope you mean another beta. It's not a big issue. Just thought you may like to know.I also fixed the inconsistant DB in the blended brake system on the JetTrain & AEM7 as well as the problem with pneumatic brake cylinder release on the AEM7.I found for the JetTrain, the RailDriver controller works better if a piJetTrain.eng file is made.
For the AEM7, a modified piAcelaHHL.eng file with
Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.0250 0 instaed of
Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.0125 0 in both engine files works best for the independent brake. At the moment, I am working on the Amfleet cars to prevent them from binding on some of the sharper radii of the Test Track route.Richard

RE: NALW NEC ELECTRIC MEGA PACK 1 RELEASED

It has nothing to do with th MSTS physics engine. A simple edit of the ENG file does it. In order for you to try it I would have to send you a copy of the relevent files. Especially if you are using a RailDriver controller. If you wish to try them let me know.In the meantime, try this basic fix for the JetTrain. It may work on its own but I can't guarantee it. DynamicBrakesMinUsableSpeed( 10 )
DynamicBrakesMaximumEffectiveSpeed( 180 )
DynamicBrakesMaximumForce( 75kN )
DynamicBrakesResistorCurrentLimit( 800 )
DynamicBrakesCutInSpeed( 15 )
DynamicBrakesMaxAirBrakePressure( 100 )
DynamicBrakesFadingSpeed( 20 )
DynamicBrakesDelayTimeBeforeEngaging( 0 )
DynamicBrakesMaximumSpeedForFadeOut( 380 )
DynamicBrakesEffectAtMaximumFadeOut( 0 )
DynamicBrakesHigherSpeedCurveExponent( 7.5 )
DynamicBrakesLowerSpeedCurveExponent( 0.9 )
DynamicBrakesNumberOfControllerNotches( 0 )The AEM7 is more complicated as there are several areas of the ENG file that require editing. The best way to do it would be to make up ZIP packages of the JetTrain and one consist of the AEM7 using the AEM7dc Amtrak PhaseIII 905 engine and six of the Amfleet cars.Richard

RE: NALW NEC ELECTRIC MEGA PACK 1 RELEASED

LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-03 AT 01:29 PM (EDT)

I will be on my way to work in a little while so I will make up the two packages and have them to you by Monday. The work that jtr1962 is doing on the physics looks fantastic and is not included in my work yet. The other mods are in pneumatic braking function, the depressed bell button on initial start of the AEM7 and bounding box issues.Richard

You did a perfect job with the touching diaphragms Buzz. Certainly hope I didn't offend you. The issue isn't with size or coupling spring r0. I sent a e-mail to Chuck explaining what I meant by "issues" and the bounding box relation to the graphic of the car. Diaphragms are supposed to collide when coupling but not the carbody. In my humble opinion the bounding box represents the carbody in the MSTS programing not the graphic.Richard.

VERY WIERD CRASH Help Requested Please!

Hey Chuck...Again a great model,,,but something very wierd is happening and the patch does not seem to resolve...I have some activities ready to go so I when ahead and swapped consists out so I would have some AEM-7 trains..I then proceeded to run my activity and after MANY trials, taking trains in and out of the AI line up I think I have what is happening partially figured out. When ever an AI train lead by an AEM-7 appears the whole thing crashesThis how I came to this conclusion:I then ran the activity running an AEM-7 but NO AEM-7 trains in my AI line up. Lots of other trains tho. No problemsI then added the AEM-7 lead trains to the traffic flow and BAM! soon as one is about to come into view it crashes. I ran without traffic and had no crashI ran with the default Acela and again all was well till I tried to meet an AI train. I even re did the activity to make sure I did not corrupt anything and I still get the same results. So any ideas from NALW or anyone else I am open to. Again PLEASE this is not a complaint, I wanted to let you all know what was up. I very much want to include the AEM-7's in my activity pack.I also deleted all new consists made with the new consists. I went ahead and re did the install and the patch. I went and made new consists and well here I am again. Could it be too many details crashing the sim? Also static consist do nto seem to crash the sim. Many thanks in advance!BobFlorida Railfan Page

RE: VERY WIERD CRASH Help Requested Please!

The AI train crash might have to do with the way the sound is aliased for the AEM-7. The .sms file is first aliased in the .eng file with the line "../../common.snd/NEC_ELECTRIC/alias/aem7Eng.sms". Once in the .sms file the sounds are aliased to their respective folders. Aliasing sounds from the .sms file is not the problem(most of my trains do this) but using aliasing for the .sms file itself may be causing the crashes(which I can't confirm or deny this since I haven't yet made an activity with the AEM-7). The solution would be to put a folder named "Sound" in the NALW_AEM-7 and NALW_ALP44 folders, copy the .sms file into that folder, remove one set of .. from the .sms file, and have all the AEM-7 .eng files just reference the .sms with the line "aem7Eng.sms" which by default will look for it in the NALW_AEM7/sound or NALW_ALP44 folder. This solution may not work, but I can't think of anything else at the moment that could be causing crashes. One other minor issue is that the AEM-7s feel a bit anemic compared to the way I remember them. This has to do with the way MSTS deals with electrics. If you have, say, 7000 HP as the power of an electric locomotive you will indeed have 7000 HP-right at the point where the TE times the speed gives you 7000 HP. Once you go above that speed, you have a sudden dropoff in power. This dropoff is greater the higher the highest speed of maximum TE occurs. For the AEM-7AC, for example, this occurs at roughly 43 MPH, so you do indeed have 7000 HP at 43 MPH(and less power at lower speeds-TE limited), but maybe only 5000 HP at 44 MPH. This increases slowly again as speed increases, but never gets anywhere near 7000 HP again. The AEM7AC I believe has 7000HP at all speeds, so the problem can be fixed by simpling adding the line "DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort( 21.5 )" somewhere in ther second portion of the .eng file. What this does is to give a constant power of 7000 HP at any speed at which the power is not wheel-slip limited. The number used(21.5) is derived by taking the speed at which the loco develops maximum TE and maximum HP and dividing it by 2. This is calculated at 43 MPH based on the rating of 7000 HP and 271.25 KN maximum continuous force. I don't know why this method works, it just does. I used it when I helped Clem Tillier with the TGV. He had the same problem-less than expected power at high speeds. For the AEM7DC I do believe that there is a power dropoff above a certain point but I believe the loco develops up to 7000 HP at low speeds(electrics always have an overload capability at low speeds). Thus the solution is to simply increase the power from 4320 kW to 5222 kW. The power dropoff that occurs once you pass about 69 mph should be fairly steep and the loco should develop something close to its continuous rating of 4320 KW at higher speeds rather than 5222 kW(I haven't tested it yet but when I do I'll let you know the exact HP you get at 125 MPH with this method). If you guys have TE curves of either AEM7 I can try to match them more exactly than the methods I just described might do.BTW, super great job on these. They were well worth the wait. You guys at NALW just amaze me with the consistent quality of your trains.

RE: VERY WIERD CRASH Help Requested Please!

Thanks!! Glad you like them!As to the crashes, while i do not discount ANYTHING, there are some people i have spoken to that have absolutely no problem using the AEM7 on AI consists in activities. At least not on the original NEC or NECv2. However, i assume the problems are on the NECv4, so i think it is something interacting with using equipment pushing MSTS limits on a route pushing MSTS limits! I have had something similar on Ohio Rail and ADFRR, and my solution to that seemed to have something to do with how many textures were being loaded. I solved my problem there by just using the same loco on all consists and the same car on all consists, thereby resulting in just one set of textures being used for the loco, and one set for the cars (passenger activity of course ). I don't know if this is the same thing here or not... We have a couple of other ideas if not...Chuck is out of town right now, and i don't know if he brought a computer with him, so unfortunately he won't see your physics suggestions until next week... Bob should see this though. I personally will probably actually give them a try! Never opposed to trying new things to see if it makes stuff better! Well, in MSTS anyway ------ BUZZ ------

Results of AEM7 physics experiments

I've devised two different methods of adjusting the tractive effort curve of the AEM7DC. Before I started I obtained the following figures from the "stock" NALW AEM7DC:Continuous TE=168.4 kN
Maximum TE=186.83 kN
Maximum speed for 100% TE=57.3 mph
5790HP@57.3 mph
3730HP@57.4 mph
4630HP@125 mphNote that the TE dropoff I mentioned in my previous post occurs at 57.3 mph. At that point the available power drops by about 36%, and then gradually creeps up with speed but never comes anywhere near the rated power(5790HP), even at 125 mph. Incidentally, 4630 HP is just barely enough to maintain 125 mph on the level with 8 Amfleets, and it took some 20 minutes to get there. Obviously the AEM7DC is underpowered compared to the real AEM7 DC. BTW, I obtained the horsepower figures by temporarily putting a digital tractive effort meter in the cab and using the equation HP=(TE)(speed)/375.Before I started I reasoned that the maximum continuous TE should be equal to the rated 42,000 lbs, or 186.83 kN. Unlike freight locomotives where you might be developing maximum TE for many minutes or even hours a high speed passenger loco like the AEM7 will only need to develop maximum TE for a few minutes at most to accelerate a train out of a station. Therefore, I believe it's safe to assume that you can use the 42,000 lb figure for MaxContinuousForce rather than a lower figure. You can also use the same figure for MaxForce as well, or you can use something a bit higher(perhaps to simulate more TE while sanding). In any case, the number used for MaxForce doesn't affect the results much since it is only used between 13 and 26 mph in MSTS.The first method involves changing MaxContinuousForce to 186.83 kN and then adjusting the MaxPower figure upwards until you end up with the rated 5790 HP at 125 mph. It turns out that it is necessary to use MaxPower(5825kW) to accomplish this. The results are as follows:Maximum speed for 100% TE=69.7 mph
5790HP@51.7 mph
7000HP@62.5 mph
7840HP@69.7 mph
4760HP@69.7 mph
5790HP@125 mphYou do end up with the desired 5790HP at 125 mph but between 51.7 mph and 69.7 mph you exceed the continuous rated power by a large margin(as much as 35%). This may or may not be realistic as I don't have any AEM7 tractive effort curves. Also, there is an even steeper power dropoff(39%) than before. Again, this may or may not be realistic for this locomotive. The second method involves using the NumWheels and Adheasion parameters to limit maximum TE. I used Adheasion(0.45 0.908 1.8 0) and NumWheels(8). The Numwheels(8) refers to the second instance in the Engine part of the .eng file. The stock values were Adheasion(0.26 0.49 1.8 0) and NumWheels(4). The new values give a maximum TE of 42,000 lbs on dry rail and 46,250 lbs while sanding. Since the maximum TE was taken care of by Adheasion and NumWheels I was now free to set the MaxContinuousForce parameter to whatever it needed to be to get 5790 HP @ 125 mph. I used MaxPower(5222kW) so that the locomotive would be limited to at most 7000 HP under all conditions. By experimenting I found that MaxContinuousForce(225kN) gave the desired results at 125 mph. The results are as follows for method 2:Maximum speed for 100% TE=51.9 mph
5790HP@51.9 mph
4660HP@52.0 mph
5790HP@125 mphNote that the locomotive stays at or under its rated power of 5790 HP at all times despite the MaxPower(5222kW) parameter. This is because the maximum TE is limited to 186.83kN(42000 lbs) by Adheasion and NumWheels instead of the 225kN specified in MaxContinuousForce. If this were not the case, then you would have 7000HP at 51.9 mph instead of 5790HP. Also, the maximum continuous TE would be too high for this type of locomotive. Note that this time around there is only a 20% or so dropoff in power after passing the maximum speed for 100% TE.A similar method can be used for the AEM7AC, or by using DieselEngineSpeedOfMaximumTractiveEffort(21.5) and leaving everything else as is you end up with 7000 HP across the entire speed range(except for speeds of 43 mph or less where TE limits the maximum horsepower). Again, without specific information I can't say which method is best.Which of these methods is better depends upon the actual locomotive TE curve but I hope I at least illustrated the degree of flexibility that exists in shaping an electric engine's TE curve. The MaxForce parameter can be used for even further modification in between the speeds of ~13 and ~26 mph if desired.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

Hi Joe,
The way the file was originally written, the 186.83 was supposed to be the MaxContinuousForce(186.63kN) instead of the MaxForce. Our data has the 125 mph value at closer to 5,500HP, and actual max of about 6850HP at ~53-55mph for the DC locomotive. I think using your suggestions, using MaxPower of 5175kW and MaxContinuousForce(215kN) should get this about right.
The AC version will actually peak out at about 8000 HP short term, and maintain 7000HP at all ranges as you mention. What would you think about raising the DieselEngineSpeedOfMaximumTractiveEffort(21.5) to
DieselEngineSpeedOfMaximumTractiveEffort(23) to account for the higher peak rating. Also note the continuous ought to be the 271.25kN, not the MaxForce value.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

Hi Bob,Good job on the AEM7 and Amfleet physics. Other than the power problems I mentioned everything else seems to be in order. Emergency braking of about 3 mph/sec is exactly what the Amfleets are capable of. Service braking also feels about right. I changed the derail force to 3.0 times the car weight so I could maintain track speed on NEC4 without derailing. Unfortunately, there are a few places that have 1000 meter radius curves and you derail on those at 125 mph with current settings of 2.5xcar mass. I still have no idea what a good value for derail force should be as far as realism goes. There just doesn't seem to be much prototype info in that regard.>The way the file was originally written, the 186.83 was

As I'm sure you've learned, electrics are slightly more complicated than diesels in their TE characteristics so if you want to be accurate(at least within MSTS limits) you need as much prototype data as possible. One thing I had to do after my modifications was to add the Antislip() parameter to the DC version files or you'll start getting wheel spin at around 85% throttle at low speeds. Even the DC versions had an antislip mechanism, as does the ALP-44, but I heard that the engineers control slipping better by just backing off on the power when they feel wheel spin is imminent. In any case, the AEM7/ALP44 is a rather "slippery" locomotive and NJ Transit can have trouble meeting schedules if they run out of sand, especially in the fall. Amtrak doesn't have the problem to the same extent as they don't stop as frequently.>The AC version will actually peak out at about 8000 HP short

I'm thinking method 2 might also work well for the AC version if I can limit the power dropoff to about 12%(i.e. 8000 HP-7000 HP).I'll post back here after I've done a bit more testing.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

OK, I just finished my testing. I was able to come pretty close to the actual AEM7 performance by experimenting a bit. For the DC version I used Adheasion(0.41 0.818 2 0) and NumWheels(8) to limit the TE to 42000 lbs(dry rail) and 46760 lbs(sanded). Using MaxContinuousForce(208kN), MaxForce(208kN), and MaxPower(5110kW) gives the following results:Maximum speed for 100% TE=54.9mph
6165HP@54.9 mph(no sanding)
6850HP@54.9 mph(sanding)
4475HP@55.0 mph
5560HP@125 mphYou can only get the 6850 HP by using the sanders, although if desired you can also get it without sanding by using Adheasion(0.41 0.95 2 0). I thought it made driving more interesting if you need the sanders to get full power(and a little extra TE). The HP at 125 mph is as close as I could get it without causing the maximum 6850 HP to occur in a speed range other than 53 to 55 mph. In any case it's off by only about 1%, certainly within the variance between units. It turns out that the only modification needed for the AC unit is to add the line DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort(21.5) as I described earlier(note: by mistake I called the parameter DieselEngineSpeedOfMaximumTractiveEffort, not DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort). Nothing else in the stock NALW file needs to be changed. Once again you need to use the sanders to obtain more power and TE(59560 lbs unsanded vs. ~70,000 lbs sanded). The results were as follows:Maximum speed for 100% TE=43.0mph
7000HP@44.0 mph(no sanding)
8000HP@43.0 mph(sanding)
7000HP@44.1 mph
7000HP@125 mphThere was a bit of difficulty measured the TE while sanding since it changed rapidly but it was around 69500 lbs at 43 mph, which is nearly 8000 HP. Using the DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort(23) suggested by Bob gives a maximum of around 8500 HP at 46 mph sanding, and 7500 HP at 47 mph without sanding, which is a bit high.In any case I think I've solved the power problems to my satisfaction.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

Hi Joe,
Thanks for all your efforts in getting the sim to be that and not the game it started as!!
On the AC version, the reports we have, verified by several Amtrak engineers, says the units will easily exceed 8,000 HP short term. I will, I think, use 21.8mph on the updates if Chuck agrees. That ought to get the AC units just about right.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

You're quite welcome, Bob. I'm glad to help so that we can make a great add-on a little better.21.8 should get the units a bit over 8000 HP peak, along with 7000 HP continuous once you get past the mid-forties. Should be just about perfect.BTW, do any of the Amtrak engineers know how fast the TE curve falls off on either type of unit once you get past 125 mph? Probably not much can be done about it in the sim, but I'm curious. In the sim the power falls linearly from 100% to 0 when you go from MaxVelocity to MaxVelocity + 5 m/sec. Hopefully in MSTS2 you'll be able to fine tune the dropoff.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-03 AT 11:49 PM (EDT)

Hi Joe & Bob,
Just got back and started reading this very interesting thread.....
Thanks Joe for straightening out the power equation for us.....Now here is what I understood from "interviewing" AEM7 Engineers at Union Station....8 Cars at 125mph sounds about right for the "original" AEM7dc as I understand it.... And a long time to get there is probably correct.... Mostly they double headed them for acceleration.....
And left the E60s do the "heavy lifting" on the real long trains and anything that had "direct release brakes".....125mph is the current speed limit on the NEC for anything hauling Amfleets.... i.e. the AEM7s.... I believe that setting the MSTS governor to 125 which will allow it to run up to 127-129 depending on load is probably correct also.... I know they have been clocked at 130 but that was when they were new and not "blessed" with many years of Warrington maintenance (read lack of maintenance).....I have been told that the ACs will spike to around 10khp for "short time ratings" but most of the substations, especially on the "lower end", can't hack it when they do.... So they usually don't "load them up" that steeply.... When running I keep the ammeter at the red line when starting and increase as necessary to hold it there until I am up to speed.... Was told by one more mature (read old) hogger that was the best way to "get out of dodge".... The ACs are reportedly a lot less slippery than the DCs.... And that is usually credited to the new computers.....FWIW, The Amtrak drivers usually attribute the slipperiness of the ALP44s and the NJT AEM7dcs to typically lousy train handling by NJT engine crew.... My favorite quote says something about the NJT guys think the throttle/controller(more accurate term) is an on/off switch...
Great fun figuring all this out!

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

Hi Chuck,I did a bit more experimenting with the AEM7 DC version. My previous results got the power right at 55 mph and 125 mph but the power dropped to 4475HP after 55 mph and then gradually crept back up. By adding the line DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort(27.5) and changing the MaxPower from 5110kW to 3550kW you still get 6850 HP at 55 mph and 5500HP(exactly!) at 125 mph but you don't get the power dropoff. Rather, the power falls from 6850HP down to 5500 HP as speed increases from 55 mph to 125 mph. I think this was how the AEM7DCs behaved since the acceleration feels more like I remember it. IIRC, most 6-car trains could get to 100 mph in about 2 minutes. With this new modification they behave this way in MSTS as well, and the time to accelerate an 8-car train to 125 mph is reduced by over minute.>I know they have been clocked at 130 but that was when they were new
>and not "blessed" with many years of Warrington maintenance (read
>lack of maintenance).....Thanks for confirming that for me. I used to watch trains at Princeton Junction around 1982 to 1985 and I routinely clocked AEM7s with 5 or 6 Amfleets doing 130+ mph, so at least I know I wasn't seeing things. Totally awesome sight, BTW, especially in the winter when there was snow on the tracks. I saw one go by once that seemed to be going even faster than usual but I didn't have my stopwatch handy. Must have been a reason for those 150 mph speedometers Also, remember the crash at Chase in 1986? The NTSB said the train was doing 128 mph before going into emergency. Again, this confirms that the AEM7s can go a few mph above their rated speed.

Hi Chuck,
If your lights still work, you will find a set of files incorporating much of this in your email, along with some other things (a fix for the brakes on overspeed).
I did not use the DC version with the 3550kW and 27.5mph line. I will email that shortly.

RE: Results of AEM7 physics experiments

Thanks Bob I picked the last change off of here and put it into Physics version 1.6.....Now if I can only figure out what the heck RickCan is talking about and with any luck he really did find a break through on Blended/Dynamic brakes (been kicking my a$$ for a long time) maybe there will be a physics version 1.7 before I package up a patch....Chuck Schneider

RE: NALW NEC ELECTRIC MEGA PACK 1 RELEASED

To all at NALW, fabulous job and infinite kudos! ^_^There's just one tiny critique I would like to make...
Almost EVERYTHING in the NEC Mega Pack is back-ass-wards, B-end first! o_o;;From what I've seen (countless pictures on the Internet, and many trains on the NEC in real life), AEM-7's are usually run with their electrical box towards the front of the engine, and Amfleet I coaches and business class coaches are almost always run four windows and Amtrak logo first. (Cafés and Dinettes from what I've seen tend to run any which way...)
Only Amfleet II's are run five-windows first. But other than that, life is good and the NEC Mega Pack is a godsend! You guys are AMAZING!(And perhaps an update to the Amfleets and the AEM-7 direct in the next pack? I'll make you all my false gods for a month! =P)
Oh yes, and is Jens-Chris' new and improved E-60 going to be an HEP equipped E-60MA (#600-610), or is it just going to be #620 E-60CP, which in real life is (was) only used for MOW-service?

Hehe... Well, yes and no...It is a LONG story.... BUT - in short, there is ONE lower-poly distance level set out at like 700 meters. The ONE disadvantage to 3D Canvas is a lack of control on the distance levels, and the smallest it will ever make one is whatever the poly count is on the main body. For this car, that is not still not too small...So there is 1 additional LOD for distances, and it should help when approaching an AI or static train, but only up to about 700 meters.------ BUZZ ------

There is a minor problem with the SEPTA AEM-7. The doors don't match. The doors look like Phase IV Amtrak. They are completely mismathced. The doors should match the rest of the unit.

Great Stuff, CHUCK & TEAM !!! Just what my NEC-4 needs ! Hope it's not too huge a download, making my ISP break out in a sweat. It's hot enough here in the U.K. as it is, recording the highest temperature in the U.K.'s history couple of days ago.B.t.w., have you tried to improve the MOIRE shimmer 2 thirds up the pictures by adjusting the Anisotropic settings of your Graphics Card ?O t t o

RE: NALW NEC ELECTRIC MEGA PACK 1 RELEASED

There is ( may be? ) a physics problem with Amtrak AEM-7 #927. This is the only engine I have had a chance to test so I don't know if this affects any of the other engines in the Mega Pack. After an emergency application caused by me (speeding), the train brakes do not fully release.
In the attached photo notice the HUD display indicating zero (0) PSI in the brake cylinder.
Now look at the brake cylinder gauge....!!?
This photo was snapped running at full throttle but only making 69 mph, so the brakes ARE dragging...big time. Chuck, can you help me make my schedule cause I sure can't with all the sparks and smoke from those dragging brakes!

RE: NALW NEC ELECTRIC MEGA PACK 1 RELEASED

Hi Vince,
I saw this on my first run a few days ago. I have tried all sorts of things but nothing has fixed it yet. The screen shot you show is correct in both places. The only brake cylinders not releasing are on the locomotive, the cars drop out at 50 pounds, the locomotive at 64 pounds, the value for a triple valve 90 pound system. I have one more thing to try, but it will create some problems with the blended brakes, I will test it soon though just in case. There is one other thing that could also be a problem, but that will require some other NALW members input before i go there??? I have adjusted the power curve after discussing with Joe Realmuto. I have also adjusted the derail forces. Now if we can get the brakes to go off after overspeed. You will note, it does not do this if you manually go into emergency. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Bob

No, that was not the problem either?? I think we are going to have to get the group together on this, I don't see a solution in the .eng file (maybe I am missing something obvious, please apply the 2X4 gently if that is the case)??

Just to let everyone know...We may have found something. We'll obviously be testing it out for a bit to see if this fixed the penalty e-brake problem without damaging something else... Stay tuned!------ BUZZ ------

Otto - If you can't get somebody to do this for you in the UK - IIRC you live there - drop me a line at: binglesh@chartermi.net - we'll work something out. No profit involved, just send me a CD mailer with the proper postage. But it would go faster and better if you can get someone near by. Have you tried download managers such as GetRight? I can't remember if Train-Sim library supports partial download, disconnect, then resume download per GetRight. Some servers do, some don't. Since I got cable I don't have the problem, however I try not to forget what it was like when I had dialup via phone lines. THe not-so-good news is the Train-Sim connection which usually runs between 110 and 150 for me dropped to under 40 during the download of this zip package. First time it has been that low, hope it was just temporarily overloaded Internet circuits.Let me know, Otto - Bing

Thanks for offering, Bing !I got DTA living not far from me, he has Broadband and I think a CD Burner. Shall ask him first !Hoping to get Broadband myself in September after I spent £ 500 on a local newspaper advert asking interested parties to pre-register to get past the minimum British Telecom demanded before converting our local exchange. Work is in progress now ! I always like to reward guys who are willing to help me, sort of "get yourself a few drinks on me". Take Care, O t t o.

RE: Number 2???

Don't nag NALW. They don't like to tell you release dates. The only people that really get to know the release dates are NALW staff and their beta testers, maybe not even them. So, please do not bug NALW about release dates. I'm anxious for NEC Pack 2 as well, but I have to be patient in waiting, and I check new files everyday for it. As to those with AI train problems with the AEM-7's, I ain't got no problems with that.
