RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

I don't wish to be overly critical of the creators of this route but the little blurb which accompanies each file in the Download Library listing is somewhat scant of information - apart from the dire warnings, that is! There isn't even a reference to "File X of Y" - something which has become a standard feature of route info.Bruce.

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

Presently, what you are downloading will NOT run. You'll have to wait for the D1-D7 files to hit before you'll have everything. If you want some sample images, do a search on GM&O in the message forum and you will find MANY screen shots of the Springfield area previously posted by Paul Fowler. If you've been following the various threads on the route, you SHOULD know that there were some errors in the files uploaded to train-sim.com. There are still 7 30 MB files yet to get on the site. When fully downloaded you should have a total of about 430 MB ZIPPED. This will unzip to around 900 MB. After running the Install.bat file the route grows to 1.4 GIG!As it stands right now, the GM&O route begins just north of Ridgely Yard in Springfield, Illinois. The line runs well south of Springfield and currently ends.At Iles Tower (south of downtown SPG) the Air Line runs west and joins the Jacksonville Line. The Jack Line runs from Jacksonville, Illinois, to Roodhouse, Illinois. At Roodhouse the line continues south to Godfrey, Illinois where the mainline (Chi-STL) will eventually join up.Currently rail does not run much west of Roodhouse (the Kansas City line) however this is the next portion of the route to be built. It was ORIGINALLY completed all the way to Louisiana, Mo (Miss. River crossing) however an R.E. crash cost the loss of approximately 2 months work in rail, bridges, and scenery.SCENERY:Around and through Springfield the scenery is spectacular! You can expect frame rates to slow down considerably but Paul Fowler has done absolutely beautiful work through town.Very little scenery exists elsewhere on the route at this time as the priority is to get rail in place first. Eventually (and we're talking over the course of a year I'm thinking) there will be considerable scenery on the route. We are working on making this route to be "just like you actually would see". This means MANY custom buildings and so forth.SIZE:The route is, without question, the largest undertaking in route-building history with some 700+ miles of track to be included. You can expect to have trackage in/around Kansas City, Joliet, Chicago, and St. Louis which will, again, be as if you were right there. Please be patient. I can assure you that your patience WILL be rewarded!

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

As I said from the start..I pulled no punches. I have informed everyone on here, many times, this route will be big, and FPS will be around 10 FPS. Most of you have encouraged me to go forth so I did. Here is the result. Remember, you don't have to download it if you don't want it.It has been no secrete that the route was going to be big..and it's gonna get bigger. The route distribution is all in Jim's hands. He will work out the bugs and get it going soon. I agree with Jim..everyone must be patient, after all, this is not a way of life for us..it's just a hobby, and hobbies can wait.

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

I wasn't bashing your route folks. I appreciatte everything all of the fine members do here, for free no less, but when I said me thinks I will wait a while, I need to see some screens and get more info on the route, before I ask someone to send it to me on CD, because there is no chance in hell I will download it on my dial up account. So relax, and keep up the great work.Chris Bogley

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

DID YOU READ THE "READMEFIRST" FILE?
DID YOU READ THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN THE POST ON THIS FORUM?
(NOT yelling, only emphasizing the above points...)Please, people....RTDI before asking a lot of questions....Directory is: GM&OP0There are also instructions for obtaining the route on CD posted several days ago.Like Paul said: This is a HOBBY. I really don't have time to answer a lot of questions that were clearly covered in the instructions included with the route AND also posted on the Train-Sim forums. If I spend all my time answering questions I can't take care of the issues with incorrect files, making sure everything we uploaded is correct, and (lest we forget!) adding more to the route!Again, as I have said NUMEROUS times already: Patience is a virtue. Also, this is a BETA release to the general public and we EXPECT there to be problems and issues with the route. I welcome all reports of bugs IN THE ROUTE but please try to look at what you're unzipping before you blindly hit the "extract" button and make sure it's going where it's supposed to go. I've never done self-extracting mass files before so it's also a learning experience for me. It WILL be better in future releases...Thanks.... <vent closed>

I'm sure that you know when you post something here there will be questions.Maybe your instructions aren't clear enough.Have a nice day.

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

I think I'll pass on the route all together Jim and gang. Your attitude sucks, and I really don't have a need to tie up 1.4 gig of my harddrive with a beta route that is clearly taking too mcuh of your time to clearly explain things and answer questions, one of which was in the original post I made, asking how long the route was, which you never said, only to say it started in Springfield, and ended south of there!I realize this is a hobby for all of us, and you get nothing for this route, except knowing you did it, BUT when you are talking about such a set of downloads and files, you have to leave yourself open to answering questions about this and that. But enough said, my vent is closed on this matter, soory for taking up your time. I got other routes to run right now.Chris Bogley

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

I have to agree also. I also encounter errors with these zip files. gmo01d1.zip:error local header signature not found disk #1 offset. Numerous files were like this. gmo01d3.zip:invalid compressed data to inflate. Numerous files were like this also. I created the folder but files were still going where they wanted to go. thought you'd like to know. I wish you much success on your route.

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

Chris
With all due respect I don't think that was aimed at you.
It was also stated that the caps were not yelling but there to underscore the importance.
I didn't take that there was a problem with asking questions just that tying up time with questions covered in the Readme files takes time away from A. taking care of questions not covered in the Readme and B. working on expanding the route.
Living in the Land of Lincoln I can tell you outside of Springfield your talking farmland and the like, the towns and such are just breathtaking and you will engage full wow mode, the best guess from my topo map book of the state puts the route at about 40-45 milesGary S

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

I do not understand the problems that people are having with unzipping these files. I unzipped them successfully here before they were uploaded to Nels. I also PUBLICLY stated that this was my first attempt at trying to build self-extracting zip files which would create and rebuild their own directory structure. It would seem that I either did something wrong or botched something in the setup of the zip file.$10.00 via PayPal will get you a CD of the route which you can install easily. BTW: I make ZERO profit on this and the $10 is a break-even figure for buying CDs, the packaging, and shipping charges.I suspect that MOST problems with these files are the result of an aborted download and AGAIN remind everyone to check the file size of the file on YOUR system against the Train-Sim download listing. A LOT can happen (especially on Dial-Up!) that can foul up a big download.FWIW: I have spent approximately 6-8 hours per day the past two weeks trying to get this route ready for beta release. I suppose that people just EXPECT everything to work perfectly with a beta release and have probably made a serious mistake in attempting to get the route out to the general public. We were anxious to give people the opportunity to get a look at what we've got finished so far in the hope that this would spur on some enthusiasm after exploring the route. Now I'm seriously considering not making any further beta releases...Paul has promised everyone that the initial release (primarily his work) would be freeware and I will uphold that promise. Given some of the attitudes and lack of understanding/patience I've seen I'm not sure I even want to do this route for anyone else but myself!JBDJBD

RE: How about some info on the GM&O Route

Jim no one is blaming you for the problems that are occurring. As you stated this a beta version. It ran fine for you when you tried but somewhere in the upload/download process things got botched. Most of the concern centers around the response the people got from you inquiring about problems they were having. Before getting upset with people for asking questions maybe you should take into consisderation that there may be problems that the readme file doesn't cover. Being that we had no part in helping create the route we don't know what problems you may or may not have encounterd. I would like to believe that everyone here is offering constructive critizism to help you guys make a better route.

Bummer. Bad start to a good route. Try not to get to ticked with others who have questions and "complaints". I answer about 15 questions a day with Hoodoo Pass. I must take the time to answer as best I can...sometimes they actually find a problem I missed. Hang in there...it'll work out soon enough.KipPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 2
