I found many references to Beta testing in posts, but nothing that seemed to explain what it is. Can a beginner download something that's Beta or is it for programmers? Thanks.Annabelle
Hi,I think I cannot give a clear yes or no. It depends. Most of the time something is offered as Beta as it is unfinished or nearly finished and the author wants to know if there are glitches and what the opinions are of the users. Using Beta's has more risk as the chance of running into an error is greater.Dick van den Hoven

RE: Beta testing.
Hi,Great answer. I will only download and not install Beta programs. I shall have enough to keep me busy for a long time.I noticed that your name occurs in the PO&N. I have much fun with that route. Thanks for your continuing help.Annabelle

RE: Beta testing.
You should certainly avoid betas on trainsim. Even some of the tried and tested don't work! I have only had to reinstall once, but that once was enough for me.David

RE: Beta testing.
As a rule, beta versions are offered to folks for testing. It helps a great deal if the beta testers have a more than average understanding of how the sim works. Beta testing is the phase for finding, and fixing, problems before the public release. Some beta versions are released publicly, but with the understanding that the user understands it's a beta version. Understand? BTW! I've been reading your posts, and I enjoy your enthusiasm. Don't hesitate to ask questions. The only dumb question, is a question,un-asked. Hawk "Some caught a plane, some rode the train. Head for sunshine, leave the rain."

RE: Beta testing.
I doing a lot of beta testing of routes. I have been lucky (?) to be asked or the designer says ok if I ask him. What I do is see how it installs (if it at that stage,) run the route, and let the designer know what I see and my impressions of the route. I tell them all the warts and other things in it that should be fixed before it is uploaded here. I also do tell them the things I like about it. Some of them have things that are really impressive. I also give suggestion to make it better as I look at it from an activity designers viewpoint. I do this by going into the AE and see what I can do. I have had only 1 get upset, and I do mean really upset. But I let it be known up front that I will not tell someone that it is good when it is a piece of junk. I think you may have already noticed that about me.Kevin Arceneaux DEFAULT IS FOR DUMMIES Lone Wolf Activities Forum on www.3DTrains.com

RE: Beta testing.
I do quite a bit of testing for friends and really like it.But As Kevin says, You have to tell the truth, or else things get overlooked and errors occur. But the other thing is. say you test a route, the desingers might want you to run the entire length, test all switches etc and if your not up to the task, then its not worth doing at all. Because it would slow the release.
