Realistic smoke – image 3

it is some ACE file in the global folder I think it is smokemain. you need an ace viewer like TGA tool 2 to view it and a prog like paint to edit it. I made red smoke, but the steam effects use the same file so now the steam was red!

not really, KUJU treats the diesel textures somewhat differently. I am still trying to see what can be done, though to get more realistic
diesel smoke..
I'm trying, honest!Cheers

RE: realistic smoke

Hey guys
Just to let you know, I've been beta testing HAC's new smoke effect, and I can assure you, you will LOVE IT! He did an outstanding job on these smoke textures, they will be well worth waiting for. Also, when you replace the default smoke textures with the new ones, all your locos will have it since the smoke textures are a common file.GrizzlyRealistic smoke – image 11 Realistic smoke – image 12

RE: realistic smoke

The "thickness" as you call it, is not a function of the smoke texture. It is caused by the engine file settings relating to stack effects and smoke/pound of fuel burned. The smoke column in the pictures shown is generated using the latest beta test of the Challenger engine files. I have some work to do yet on the visual effects settings. This one look any better?Cheers
Harold

RE: realistic smoke

The black one is still thick or too black?
White one looks good!I guess why I feel thick is in your texture, color (or bright) difference is not as much as TA's one. Light from different angle let smoke show different bright. Different bright let smoke seen more 3 dimension. The original one of MSTS have enough bright difference but is not smooth. To TedBI don't care what you say. I am giving suggestion not complaint.
You don't like hear, don't hear.

RE: realistic smoke

same texture for both the white and black ones.. I'll have a look at the alpha channel and see if it can be tweaked. Still, the texture is sampled from photos taken in October 2002..(CP2816)Thanks for the comments

RE: realistic smoke

So Harold, will your technique be adaptable to diesels, to produce an obviously scantier, but more realistic exhaust? Hey, I just this week got around to downloading your Canadian trainset, and it's still a winner!

I'm playing with diesel smoke as we speak..files you need to tweak are in GLOBAL/TEXTURES and are smokemain.ace for steamers and dieselsmoke.ace for diesel..Glad you like the Canadian..

RE: realistic smoke

Just my opinion Harold, but I like the your original one (the one you sent me) the best. I think the extra "thickness" is what really makes it stand out. It seems when it looks a little "thinner" it loses some of its cool "billowy" effect, which I really like, especially when she's working a grade or big train.GrizzRealistic smoke – image 39 Realistic smoke – image 40

RE: realistic smoke

Well, I change my opinion. I not mean thick. I mean 3D look like.
And see picture posted by Musicman. It's more thick. But more 3D look like. And black and gray contrast is more than screenshot above. And for diesel smoke, I found it's difficult see smoke in many photos. Any one can post some?

RE: realistic smoke

True 3d look is difficult with MSTS as the smoke shape the texture is applied to is basically flat. Cheers

LAST EDITED ON Mar-04-03 AT 00:17 AM (EDT)

Hey Zach
It doesn't really have anything to do with editing engine files, that only controls the amount of smoke and it's direction. Getting this effect is done by retexturing the smoke source texture file. If you go into your MSTS folder, you'll find another folder named GLOBAL. Open GLOBAL and you'll find another folder named TEXTURES. Open this, and inside there is a texture file named smokemain.ace . This is the steam engine smoke texture. You can convert this to a bmp or tga using TGATool, and start skinning using whatever graphics program you use. Make sure if you play around with it, you back up the default! I tried working with this file some time ago trying to make convincing looking wood smoke for wood burners, so I can tell you that retexturing it and making it look good, at least in my experience, is NOT easy. Harold has done a great job with it though, and I can tell you as a beta tester the new textures will be worth the wait. GrizzRealistic smoke – image 43 Realistic smoke – image 44
