RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Hello Tony,After trying v 1.0 on my W2K system, I followed your instructions to restore all routes and consists and uninstalled the program. I then encountered numerous errors when I started MSTS.I used Route Control (which wouldn't start with anything less than the default installation routes present due to them being stored in Train Store)to check things out and found that there were numerous consists missing. Not all, by any means, were missing - but a bunch that were connected to the default routes.Have you any idea what I failed to do properly that resulted in this situation?I will try V 1.1 because, now that I know that I have to leave the default routes alone to use Train Store, your idea is such a great one.Thanks.Jon

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Jon,I think that if you used the Unstore everything! facility, that was affected by the same problem in V1.0, and it did not restore everything. If you move the folders that were left, by hand to your MSTS installation everything should be OK.You do not have to leave the default Routes 'In Use'.Train Store itself, does not care whether any/all of the Routes are stored or not. MSTS, if there are no Routes at all available, will start, but you can't select anything. It works quite happily, as long as one Route, which doesn't have to be a default Route is present.

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Thanks for your explanation, Tony. Actually, I mistyped the issue: Tain Store works - Route Control, however, gave me an error mesage that it could not operate without a "full installation" of MSTS.The two programs are clearly great compliments - Yours speeds things up, while Route Control allows for checking of Activities, consists, etc. Jon.

Folder: TRAINS\TRAINSET\DEFAULT
File: TRAINS\TRAINSET\DEFAULT\DEFAULT.WAGIf you don't leave them as fixed objects, MSTS will not run.As for MSTS not working after transfering the files back by hand, are you positive you transferred everything back to the proper folders? If you did, I can think of no reason why it didn't work. Train Store doesn't alter anything, it just moves things.-Jeff-Jeff

Thanks for your comment, Jeff.I really thought I got everything back - obviously, I didn't, since as you point out, moving back and forth should not affect anything. As I say in my response to Tony, Route Control wouldn't run either, so there was obviously something wrong in what I did.I'll download 1.1, go over the instructions again and keep your tip in mind. Thanks again.Jon

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

>I have never heard of train store v1.1 What is it. This is
>the first time that I have ever head of it. Train Store is a utility which will "store" routes from MSTS.What this means, is that you can select routes that you aren't currently using and have this utility move all the required files from your MSTS folder to a storage folder. It will move all rolling stock not referenced by the "active" routes to storage as well. The reason? If you only have 1 or 2 routes active with a slim trainset folder, MSTS loads lightning fast.

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

To help clarify a little more about the differences between Train-Store and Route Control, (the other worthwhile route manager.)Train-Store lets you speed up the loading of MSTS and also overcome built-in limitations on the maximum number of installed consists by moving the files around your disk. Very handy and works as advertised. Route Control saves disk space by compressing and storing unused routes until again needed.Train-Store saves some time and works around some limitations, Route Control saves some disk space, they compliment each other.

I am running XPPro and Train Store v1 OK. Unintentionally, it made a very good job of sorting out what stock was in use and that which was not. It left all the unused ones behind when I did a full restore. Thanks for a very useful bit of kit. v1.1 should be even better.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Hi Rich,I am sorry I can't answer for Route Control, as I haven't used it.All Train Store does is remove files from the MSTS installation that MSTS does not need to run a simulation. It does not make any changes to the contents of files in the MSTS installation. If Route Control does have problems with the optimised MSTS installation, I suggest you use the Train Store Maintenance facility before using Route Control. Once this has been run, then any Routes which are 'In Use' will be complete restored, even though there are files which are unnecessary for MSTS. Alternatively, you could use 'Unstore Everything!' which means the whole MSTS installation would be restored as it was before Train Store used it.I have tried to make sure that Train Store uses the same basis as MSTS for deciding what is needed, and all my testing has been to ensure that when things are stored, MSTS does not have any problems. I have also verified my tests with RouteRiter, and ConBuilder. Thanks

May be he don't mind add some function also move texture files and shape files between routes, that will save many diskspace for addon routes (I guess near 40%). May be he do not have interesting on that. But take a look is nothing bad.

Tony,
Any tricks to installing ver 1.1 on top of Ver 1.0? Should I unstore all before installing new version? Or just install with most of MSTS routes stored?

Tony .. what I have found out about using it with Route Control. RC works fine on mine as long as the RC folder is left unstored. In fact I just used it to check what I had stored/not stored and everything checked out fine. I tried moving the route that was in RC and got the message from RC that 'this appears to be the first time you've used RC' and at that point gracefully bowed out and unstored it.

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

TonyNo, it was not route control, it happened just when I went to store all the routes except Marias Pass 3.1, to play MSTS and then wanted to do some work on the wag/eng files.Realised when they where missing that I had to unstore everything, but all did not come back and as I said as far as I can idnetify the missing ones appear to be those that where not tied to a route or consist. Many people have such folders in their trainset if they have deleted an activity and all consists which are just specific to that activity. My point really Tony is that unless you have some handle on the way the file system works it would be difficult for a novice to suss out what was wrong because each folder has to be checked to see if the eng or wag file has gone. MSTS will give multiple failure messages and as we know will probably not load.In striaght forward downloads this is not so much of a problem but in some cases the downloads include installation bat files, and thus if the user has put this straight into Trainset and most bat files do this automatically and not transferred a copy of that folder to his own storage file, the eng/wag file is gone.Could not the program put back all wag/eng files it has stored originally in the relevant folders irrespective of whether they belong to a consist or not. At the present the program must search
for the folders originally to remove the eng/wag files.Forgot to tell you I am runing windows 2k, no problems with the program actually working just this business with the missing eng/wag files in folders in trainset not assigned to a consist.Best Regards
Robert

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-03 AT 10:37 AM (EDT)

Hi RobertI am sorry for this late reply to your query concerning Train Store, but I somehow missed your original post querying how you should handle editing consists etc.If I understand your post, you are asking why Train Store can't put back all of the stock irrespective of whether it has been used by a consist or not?Well, in normal mode where you use Train Store to select a Route or Activity for running, this would slow down MSTS considerably, and there is no need for MSTS to know about these items. But Train Store does specifically provide a Maintenance 'Prepare' function which is to be used before editing Routes and/or Activities. This function restores all of the files that are included in a Route, so it is safe to use Route Editor and Activity editor. In addition there are additional options to this 'Prepare' function that allow for 'All Consists' and 'All Stock' to be Unstored, so that you can use the Consist editor or ConBuilder without needing to worry about items that are 'not there'.The final stage of UnStore is 'Unstore Everything!' This restores everything, and there should be no items left in store after this has been run.Details of these procedures are contained in the Train Store manual. There is no need for for users to check folders. This is what the program does.Version 1.0 of Train Store did have problems with XP (one of the symptoms was that not everything was Unstored as it should have been when using 'Unstore Everything!'). Version 1.1 does not have this problem. (At least, no-one else has reported it yet.)Can I ask you to check that you are using Version 1.1 - as downloaded from here or from uktrainsim.com?If you are using Version 1.1, please can you try the Maintenance 'Prepare' function (with the 'All Stock' option, and also 'Unstore Everything!' and let me know if you still have problems. (Either of these actions should ensure that no stock is left in storage).Once again, apologies for not replying sooner.

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Hi TonyThanks for the responseI am running version 1.1, and using the maintenance function I do get all the stock back.I think maybe for future release it might be worth putting a warning note in the manual under the "normal" section about this. I had merly clicked the "unstore everything" button in "normal mode" and was thus surprised when the eng and wag files for non consist vehicles did not appear back under trainset. If they all went into store under normal mode why did they not all come back out of store with "unstore everything" under normal mode.I had not realised the necessity for going into maintenance mode to get all those vehicles back that were not yet linked to a consist or activity. Those of us who have been around MSTS for a while now, are able to go and dig around and know what is missing and then go look for it using some kind of file manager, but I was just thinking of a novice or two who might use your program and click the buttons and then not understand why his MSTS starts giving a bunch of error messages. The program you have produced is so good at what it does that I would not like to think of people being put off using it.
One other advantage I have noticed with your program is that once you have got MSTS loaded, the actual activity seems to run better, this may be because when it wants a file or whatever MSTS is only searching a much restricted file list for the item.Best Regards
Robert

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Hi Robert,'Unstore Everything!' is not dependant upon the setting of normal/maintenance. It should do exactly what it says, from whatever state your Routes are in, and irrespective of other settings.I have sent you some more info/request (to your e-mail).Thanks

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Hi Charles, You can do a straight install (it will overwrite) as long as you use the same folder as you installed V1.0. If you use a different folder the old version will still be on your machine (which isn't a problem in itself) but there are likely to be shortcuts that dangerously point to the old version.Alternatively, you can Uninstall Train Store (use the link from Start/Programs/TrainStore/Uninstall). Then install the new version. This can then be installed in the same (or a different folder) if you want.It would be best to start processing from a completely unstored set of files. If you didn't do this manually before the install, then do an 'UnStore Everything!' to start.ThanksTony

What a great program!!! I can now start MSTS in a sec. I'm running it on XP with no problems. I have a question; How do I go about changing cars and/or engines in a consist if they don't appear on, say ConBuilder? I know only the needed consists for that activity you're running are visible, but I like to change things. Thanks again.

RE: Train Store V1.1 Released

Thanks Mike, I am glad you like it.Concerning adding Consists and Stock, have a look at the section in the manual on Maintenance. Basically you need to use the Maintenance Prepare function to prepare Routes and Stock for editing with the Consist Editor or ConBuilder. There are options to allow you to use All Stock or All Consists if you need.

Hello, Hello! Your Train Store Program is wonderful and more than helpful. I have managed to confuse myself though and any help brought here is appreciated in advance. Here’s my problem: Under the Maintenance Tab, there are two check boxes which offer these choices:A "If checked all Consists (and the corresponding stock) will be unstored ready for MSTS Maintenance."andB "If checked all Stock will be unstored together with corresponding Consists ready for MSTS Maintenance."My problem / question is that I am missing the difference. It feels like the difference between 3X2 and 2X3. How is the effect of A different for MSTS Maintenance than choice B?Very respectfullyjivajiva

I've had my raildriver for about a week.
Modest system, 256 M ram on Windows XP home.
I've not observed any stuttering with raildriver that did not exist in the same location on the same routes as when I was running the keyboard. On routes where I didn't have stutter with the keyboard, I don't have stutter with the raildriver. And even on those high graphic routes that did have some stuttering, the raildriver seems to control better than the keyboard.I love mine and wouldn't want to go back to the keyboard.
