There have been a couple of postings in the last few days of problems with MSTS which may be caused by having too many consists. The optimum number seems to be 899 and more than this causes problems for some people (including me)Using Route Control I have carried out a slimming down exercise to clear out the consists not used. I also used it to slim down the Trainset folder as, although the number of locos and wagons does not seem to be relevant, the more you have increases the time it takes for MSTS to load. The way I do it is as follows:Rename the TRAINS folder TRAINSOLDCreate a new TRAINS folder with the subfolders CONSISTS and TRAINSETRun Route Control. You should now get a very lengthy report including a list of the missing consists.Highlight the missing consists and print using File > Print > SelectionGo through the consists folder in TRAINSOLD and move the missing consists on the list back to TRAINS\CONSISTSRun Route Control again to make sure you have moved all the required consists back to the correct folderAssuming there are no missing consists then highlight the MISSING LOCOMOTIVES and print as before. Do NOT print the Missing Wagons at this stage as there will be items in it such as tenders and wagons/carriages that are in the Locomotive foldersMove the missing locomotives back to the TRAINS\TRAINSET folderRun Route Control again and after making sure you missed no locomotives print out the MISSING WAGONS the same way as you did the locomotivesIMPORTANT – do not forget to also move any alias folders, common cab and sound folders, the default trains and the DEFAULT folder Run Route Control again and if you have done everything correctly you will have a clean sheet. What is left in the TRAINSOLD folder is what you do not require. Last time I did it there was over 1.50GB left in the folder. Enough room for new routes especially PO&N6 when it is finished. MSTS will also probably load a lot quicker as well.It works for me and there is no reason why it shouldn’t for you. If you screw up don’t blame me.I expect this can be done with Route Riter as well but I haven’t worked that one out yet. This should also work perfectly well with Route Control Lite.If you got this far, thanks for reading. Hopefully it will help someone.Bill

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

Thanks for the timely advice ! I have been thinking about doing something along those lines too because the LOCOMOTIVE selection Menu can no longer see all of them.Did a major "Housekeeping" of my SIM Drive G: last night, DEFRAG complaining about a flaw in the partition. Got all backed-up on H:, FORMATted G: and copied "Microsoft Games" from H: tp G:. But I still will have the same number of Trainsets, some of which the "Locomotive" Menu can't see.Any idea how that can be fixed ?

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

If you have more than 899 consists then reducing them to that number or below may well let the rest of the locomotives appear in the drop down list. As far as I am aware there is no restriction on the number of items in the trainsets folder. Someone the other day (you?) posted they had something like 1700 items or more in the trainsets folder!!Bill

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

No, I only got 269 Consists, Bill. After last night's "Housekeeping" Clean-Up all the Trainsets were back and displayed by the "Extended Menu" as well. Why I could not see all of them in certain Routes was because you can not see or select an Electric Loco or Set in a Route which is not Electrified ! Stupid me ! Definately a case of OLD AGE !

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

Having never had the courage to use the editors (one day perhaps...) all I can tell you is that in my case once 900 was reached I got error messages relating to parent this and parent that and then a crash. As soon as I reduced them, by trial and error, to 899 the errors stopped. And it wasn't a specific consist as I use both Route Control and MSTS Activity Analysis and tried swapping the consists around to see if one or more was a problem.Bill

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

I have 1320 consists according to Conbuilder.Since I've installed Conbuilder,MSTS AE crashes when I try to select a service. The number of consists wasn't an issue prior to Conbuilder.Don't get me wrong,I love Conbuilder. When I get the time I'm going to try your consist diet.

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

Hi Bill,Thanks! That is very helpful. I have printed it out for the future so that I don't lose track of this information.I have recently become a real Route Riter fan, so I may try to use your technique with it.Bill Burnett:P

RE: Slimming down the trains folder

Last week I deleted over 2,000 downloads out of my trainset folder alone. What a difference in the time it takes for MSTS to load.John
