Australia's version of Big Boy – image 4

Dear Gavin,Would be great if we had one of those on our lines. However i just need you to tell me if this is correct. A. was this the design the abondoned on favour of the "immortal" C-38s?????? (3801 is my fav NSW loco)b. were these loco's designed to be more powerful than the massive AD-60 garratt????? I saw 6029 when i was in canberra and was blown away by its size.andc. i'm not sure, but i read somewhere b4 the 38's were built there was talk of a streamlined passenger garratt.i would appreciate if you could provide an answer to one/all of my questions.Cheers,Rodman93

RE: Australia's version of Big Boy

Rodman93,A:I don't know if this design was abondoned in favour of the C38s, i think it was just a proposed locomotive.B:The loco was designed way before the AD-60 hit the line's and i think it was just an inprovement on the D57. C. i don't think there was ever talk about a streamlined Garratt before the 38's came out, but i could be wrong.I hope this helps youGavin Woolf

RE: Australia's version of Big Boy

Seeing as they are all 3'6'' gauge locos im guessing they would have to be in a state with a narrow gauge network. Hmm looks cold - maybe Tasmania? BTW Rodman is the picture in your sig of the double BB18 trip earlier this year?

Yeh i was on that trip too!...i dont get to go on many of the excursions so i enjoyed it. They seem to use the bettys a lot like on the city circle sundays. I havent been to Rosewood for a long time now, but one thing im looking forward to is the opening of the Workshops Museum here in Ipswich...have u heard they are having a train simulator inside a diesel cab?

Hey Ben,Is that taken at Walhalla? Is the loco ex-SEC? Just a guess...I've also heard of proposals for a NSWGR streamlined Garratt, which was a proposal based upon a similar locomotive built for (I think) the Algerian railways in the late thirties. The Algerian loco apparently had alot of the Chapelon improvements, but the streamlining mainly referred to the tanks, IIRC. I saw a model in (I think) AMRM a few years ago of a Garratt with streamlining a la 3801, complete with pinstriping. Interesting idea.Cheers,
Matt
