I'm trying unsuccesfully to install MSTS on a Windows ME machine (Athlon XP 1700+, 512Mb RAM, GeForce 2 MX-400 64mb, 40Gb HDD). I know: "Get rid of Win ME" (working on it).I get through the first disc ok, but about one minute after putting in the second disc (at 29% installed), the install program locks up. I have to ctrl-alt-del to close the install program.
I know the discs are OK, 'cause I installed it on a W2k machine and it worked fine. Any help would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Hmm, strange.I've been using Windows ME since the beginning of June on a completely new machine, and everything works fine for me in MSTS, no crashes; no problems what so ever. Along with no problems in MSTS everything else I've had on this PC als shared no problems, I mean I dont see why everyone hates ME, I guess Im just lucky?Maybe you should try a clean install? P.S. My PC is similar to yours with a Geforce 3 Ti200.

I'd blame the CD-ROM drive. The copy protection used on the second CD is harsh enough to cause some CD-ROMs to fail when reading.

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

The CD-ROM is a Sony 52x. I could try the CD-RW drive for install, and see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

I can't figure it out either. I closed all the programs I could to maximize RAM, and ran the install program three times (two custom installs to put everything on the hard drive, and one standard install). Nothing seemed to work. I don't know if it could be video or not, but I am going to try the newest NVIDIA driver from June. Thanks for the reply.

You either have a bad disk or something is wrong with your CD......Have you installed anything else with the cd player and had it work ok? Check your cd settings........I would tell you where to do that but have forgotten. Been using XP too long I guess to remember.......You might have a buffer problem or something....Try installing another game and see if it works......if it does, could be your disk, even though you used it successfully before........a good reason to use clone disk for everything you own........Just an idea...........TimArchived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 2

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

Have a copy of XP Pro, might just have to load it up. No problems playing on XP, then?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-02 AT 04:37 PM (EDT)

I ran ME for about two months and threw it away (after destroying the cd first). My pc never crashed so much with ME installed, and I know quite a few other people who had problems with it crashing. Get XP it's 100% better than ME.John

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

MSTS works perfectly well under Windows ME, and it does under Windows XP, I have installed on both with no problems. Just a suggestion to all people here. After installing, copy the discs and use them rather than the originals. I am glad I did, as I put the originals in a safe place and now cannot find them! LOLAs to the original problem, I would guess it is a fault on disc 2. Look carefuly at the disc and clean any blemishes you see.David

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

Dont know but maybe this will help, Try defragging the drive first then attempt a new fresh install of the sim, especially if you've got a lot of content on the drive allready John:-)

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

The thing I heard about Windows is that after a few years your hard drive is so messed up from being accessed so much that you have to format it about every 2 years. Even defragmenting the drive won't help. Have you had Windows ME for long? I would suggest a re-installation of Windows ME on a clean disk. Or better yet, put Windows XP on and see if it will install.Ive made copies of MSTS, the first disc installs fine but when the computer starts coping files from the second cd an error message pops up and says there is something wrong with the media and setup cannot continue. The original CD's are brand new and they insall fine. Could it be my burning program (Nero 5.5)?

I have been using Me for 2 years now with no problem,, I used the Full install not the upgrade from 98...on a clean hard disk,, and i dont have any of that junk that comes preloaded on a system restore disk..Most errors i have found were by software that was not set up properly,, I only run the drivers required, like i have Sound Blaster sound card,, i only install the drivers not all the other trash that comes bundled on the cd,, and when the system is up and running, i update all the drivers from the manufactures web site...

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

Been using ME for months and have no problems...but I keep it clean and defragged...fixed swap file etc. I had problems with cd2 until I changed my cd drive...then never a problem!!!The problem is a cd problem not a software one.

RE: Installation problem with Windows ME

Your problem reminds me of the one I had with XP when I first tried to install MSTS. I had a rough time at first after attempting to install MSTS on my new XP installation. Two different disk sets failed to install properly. Originally MSTS installed and ran okay on my ME system but wanted to try for improved video performance. My XP installation problem seemed related to the copy protection on the installation CDs and I never beat it. Instead I went around it. Even though trading for a second disk set at Staples did not solve the problem I bought another (newer?) small box set at the computer show and ZOOM! MSTS installed and worked great. In my case the neither of the first two installation CD sets could even be copied to the hard disk. Other CDs including MS programs will copy to my hard disk. Can your system handle both disks properly? If it can't another disk set from a newer batch would be likely to solve your problem. Don
