I looked at the read-me for the XTracks download, and could not find, or at least open, the install instructions. I need Robert's route, but only if I know what I'm doing with these tracks, and how and where to install them. If someone can help, please do. Thanks, Chris

RE: Need XTracks help please

Hi,In the X_Tracks package is included a document called:
Installation_for_dummies.txtWhen you follow the instructions in this document, everything goes well.
Here is the content of that document:
Quote XTracks 3.0
May 2002
by Okrasa Ghia (okrasaghia@yahoo.com)You don't build routes, you have never before used XTracks.
You have just downloaded a route that says something about it using
XTracks and that YOU need to install XTracks for it to work.
This is for you (everybody else: read the documentation XTracks.htm).1. Make a copy of the folder 'Train Simulator\GLOBAL' somewhere safe.
2. Copy the contents of folder 'XTracks\GLOBAL\SHAPES' to
folder 'Train Simulator\GLOBAL\SHAPES', overwrite ALL files when asked.
3. Copy the file 'XTracks\GLOBAL\TSECTION.DAT' to the folder 'Train Simulator\GLOBAL'.
You will get a question: "Do you want to replace ... last changed date
something ... with the file ... last changed date something else".
If the date of your file (the first one) is LATER than the date
of my file (the second one) you should answer 'No'.
If mine is the newest you should say 'Yes'.
If you don't get the question you did something wrong.
4. Done, happy railroading on your new route! If you run into problems try reading the documentation XTracks.htm or cry for
help either at the forum at www.train-sim.com (other forums might also be able
to help) or mail the person that made the route or you could try mailing me.
/Okrasa

RE: Need XTracks help please

But what it doesn't tell you is what to do with the textures that are in the zip file. All I did was to keep them in a folder some where safe in case they were needed. 99.99% of the time they won't as they should be in the route requiring xtracks already.Bill

RE: Need XTracks help please

For the answer to the texture question, open the "install.htm"
found in the zip.You will need them if you are placing Xtracks pieces in the RE.charlie

RE: Need XTracks help please

You know that and I know that - but don't you think it should have actually been stated in the Dummies Guide? The last thing a Dummies Guide should do is start making you reference another document before you have finished the one you are on.Bill

RE: Need XTracks help please

No, I don't think it should have been stated in the dummies' guide. The dummies' guide is only for people who need to install Xtracks in order to get a downloaded route that requires Xtracks to work, and for that you need to do two things:
1. Make a backup copy of the original global folder.
Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 22. Copy the Xtracks global folder into the \Train Simulator folder.
Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 3All the rest of the stuff is for route developers who want to make or alter a route using Xtracks, and would only confuse the computer-challenged. You don't need to copy the textures folder anywhere unless you're fooling around with the route editor, and if you're gonna fool around with the route editor you really should already know what goes where and why.

Mr Sniper Sir,Maybe we are both right My only thought was that when a 'dummy' opens a zip file, carries out the instructions and then finds there are a load of textures not dealt with he/she will tend to panic. I am not saying that the readme should say what they should do with them, rather a note saying they should ignore them.OK - so here comes the dragon Bill

RE: Need XTracks help please

Strange with people not believing you when you say they are done?
Though I think if I wrote down everything they should not do they would do an even bigger mess.
For instance if I wrote: "don't replace the tsection.dat in your routes folder". How many people would you think would go about replacing the routes tsection.dat instead of the one in the global folder?
