...but those errors relating to "parent trainopsmgr" and what not still appear. The strange thing is that they seem to appear only with specific engines and/or on particular routes - default ones as well as downloaded ones. However, at the same time this seems to be an indication to me that the problem might somehow be related to the rolling stock in question, not the actual user interface files. Probably a long shot, but is there the possibility that it might be?

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

easiest way to figure this out would be to see if the routes work with default consists in explore mode...
also , whenever a goofy one like this comes up , it may be a good idea to check how many consists you have...not much , but I hope it helps.

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Well, I have something like 820-something consists - already eliminated a whole lot after reading that TS might not like more than 900.*sigh* ...it does get tiresome at a certain point...could do much better things with my time than trying to fix a piece of software with allures ...Dominik Mann Visit www.bahn.de - http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/ - www.eisenbahnforum.deModerator at www.forum.nahverkehr-ffm.de

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Yikes!! I hadn't been aware that MSTS gets cranky with more than 900 consists. I just checked and found over 1,100. I haven't run into more than the usual number of anomolies while running MSTS, but wonder if I'm going to run into trouble down the line.Am running MSTS under Windows 98SE. Any advice? Thanks,Bob Barrows

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

@ Bob:
Well, as far as I understand it is not really PROVEN that TS does not like more than 900 consists. There *have* been various reports by people who said they had all sorts of troubles the moment they got over 900 consists, while others are well over 1,000 and still have encountered no errors. Maybe there's another factor playing into the equation, but I cannot say if and which.Well, I am running Win 2000 Pro, and this "parent something" error is about the only thing that is currently bothering me in my TS operations - except for some self-made activities freezing the sim, as indicated in another thread in the activity forum.Dominik Mann Visit www.bahn.de - http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/ - www.eisenbahnforum.deModerator at www.forum.nahverkehr-ffm.de

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Dominik, Bob, and Anyone Else With Consist Concerns:If you have any scripting skills, you could do what I did to get around this problem. I've mentioned this before on these forums, but that was some time ago, so here is an overview.I sorted all of my consists into different folders and wrote a small and simple program to load those that I wanted.1. Consists that came with the game went into "default";
2. Consists needed for an activity were put into a folder for the appropriate route, so for example all my Kicking Horse Pass consists went into a folder named "KHP".
3. Consists not associated with an activity were sorted into folders based on country, so my German trains are in "DE".
4. Unsorted consists were left in "misc" until I got to them. The program simply loads the default consists as well as those of any other folder I specify, so if I want to have my Seaview and British trains available (say), I type the following command:conswap SeaView GBAnd they get loaded, along with the default ones which are always there. The program also does some error checking and backups to prevent anything being lost if I mess something up, but I won't go into that. I'd offer the program around, but I wrote it for the Cygwin bash shell and I don't expect many people around here have it installed. It just takes a couple of seconds to run, and as long as you don't load more than the magic number of consists at any one time, MSTS will run smoothly.Another benefit of the program is quicker startup time for MSTS, as it has less data to read.(And Dominik, I really don't like the sound of you deleting consists and getting discouraged. We need people like you to keep downloading and pointing the rest of us to the good stuff!)Rob.

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

cjm,I too am getting this error, and I run win2000, and I have over 1000 consists. I only appear to get the error on specific routes and specific consists. The problem also appears to be related to the TS update.I need to do some more research. If you would like to privately communicate. derek@leder.com.auDerek>.but those errors relating to "parent trainopsmgr" and what not still >appear.

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Derek,
I, too, have the TS patch installed, but I personally do not have any indication that it might have something to do with the problem I described. After all, I installed the patch as soon as it was available for the German version, and up until a few days TS never gave me those error messages. Do you have any different indications which might somehow connect these errors with the applications of the patch?Dominik Mann Visit www.bahn.de - http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/ - www.eisenbahnforum.deModerator at www.forum.nahverkehr-ffm.de

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Dominik,Something strange going on here.Reinstalled from the cd's and then applied the updates.
Stripped out the 400 consists.
Tested the first activity from Marias pass (this one has been failing)
It passed.added all the activities back in and MPA1 still runs??????One of the things I noticed is that not all routes failed.
KHP kept running all the time??Can you add anything?Derek

RE: *sigh* Reinstalled MSTS...

Derek,I am getting more and more of the impression that those "parent XYZ does not exist" errors might, in fact, be related to the engine/trainset of your choice, not the route or any other TS file. I don't remember if I mentioned it earlier, but the Acela Express trainset was one of those units that gave me headaches with the "parent" error messages. No matter if I selected it in Explore mode or for an activity, when I wanted to drive I would always get the "parent PointsIndicator does not exist" thing, and the sim would flatly refuse to load. Well, what I did about an hour ago was to reinstall the entire trainset (or rather the excellent remake by Adam Wojcieszyk) over the "old" files, and voilá, I could drive it again. I'll keep an eye on it if it stays this way.Could you perhaps try reinstalling one or two of the engines that are causing you trouble and then look if that fixed the problem for this particular engine?

Hello!More than one thing may stir up the "Parent Track Monitor Missing" type message. My latest instance (and it is cured now) was brought about (I think) by repeatedly saving in an adverse situation. Let me explain:It was on the Boddidly Route ... the latest issue ... I was running the passenger train activity ... the one which asks, "You're good aren't you?" in the briefing screen. Of course ... no, I'm not very good. In fact, I'd been so bad and so far behind schedule that I think it was Millview or some such town ... I was so late that I'd befuddled any normal parameters. That is ... I was looking at a red light ... "permission denied," and there was nothing coming. I'd changed the consist (making it lighter ... pulling just two cars ... more "bad" ) and I sat waiting. And waiting. And waiting. This was one of those situations where I could still be waiting ... I'd gone beyond any reasonable limits of lateness ... sometimes it happens that if we're TOO late ... we may not proceed. I was using Cntrl + Shift + 9, and zooming my view up high into the Sky!Conductor Sky ... looking at all the beauty ... and I kept saving and saving ... just in case after you know ... "years and years" I'd be allowed to proceed.Somehow or other I believe this is what brought on the latest instance of "Parent Track Monitor Missing" because even with the modified consist (I did not overwrite any aspect of the activity) I'd had no instances of "Parent Track Monitor Missing."Then what'd I do? (After reinstalling and getting that same error message.)I erased all my saves. Guess what? No more problem! And ANOTHER instance of a documented cause of the "Parent Track Monitor Missing" message. Long story short? It may sound nutty ... but try deleting your saves!!jivajiva

Hello! The Parent Track Monitor error messages remind me of a mitigating symptom. "We" have trouble isolating and flagging this syndrome by virtue of its nebulous nature. It is my understanding that problems related to PTM stem from "saves in nowhere." My "grasp" of systems is distant, strategic, romantic. I'm one who sees the forest but misses the trees. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes this is ridiculous! But this is what I see here:In general, we have MSTS running fine, then the PTM error messages crop up. When? After making a change in an activity ... and saving that change. This can be done outside of the activity editor by even those who have no exposure to so much as an activity editor. All you have to do is go out of bounds ... beyond some included parameter by using a new engine or consist ... by running a passenger activity ludicrously (Thank you, Mike Tyson!) late ... usually such transgressions are accidental ... and then ... SAVING. This makes the glitch harder to track. "What'd you last do?" is harder to answer when you really may not have the first clue... that is, when what we did was not intended or even perceived. Why? My theory? The Parent Track Monitor is like the star whose planets may be perceived by the wobble caused by her (or his) orbiting planets. Our Activities are the planets. We make changes to an activity, then virtually stand upon (or in) that activity and when we look to see our sun, the PTM, using the default settings ... hey, our path is different now. Ergo ... no sun found. No Parent Track Monitor.Sometimes then, I get back on track by restoring what I've changed. Lately I've been having great success by actually simply deleting saves, (back them up if you really want to). The problem shows up here, there, only there sometimes here, because it almost certainly comes about as I’ve tried to describe.Once, because of the truth in what I’m trying to share here, I found I could run MSTS via a networked computer without the Parent Track Monitor error message ... It is nutty!
It is wonderful!
All this from 1s and 0s? Come back?Respectfullyjivajiva
