I hope not. Even if the thing is not backward compatible, it should come with a conversion utility for existing rolling stock, structures etc.I would hope that even with the new graphics and game engine improvements that there is some compatibility between the two, but without all the shortcomings of the present first release. An easier Route editor would be a start along with a whole host of options available to expand the MSTS universe even more than before.
Would the removal of some of the hardcoding be too much too ask ?
Probably !

Well... MSTS needs so many improvements...If they've listened to their buyers, and the program has everything everyone wants except backwards compatibility... it will likely be worth it.*shrugs* hopefully it'll all be compatible.Tim Frost

This just posted on 3d-Perfection's website"May 7th, 2003 - Microsoft® Train Simulator 2 has been announced. We at 3D-Perfection Models thought this would be a good time to re-assure are customers of our commitment to them. We will support both, Train Sim 1, as well as version 2 software. Our software packages will be updated to support version 2 of Train Simulator, and the updates will be made available shortly after version 2 is released."Hmmmm....this makes it sound like MSTS 2 may be a very different animal.

RE: Uhhh.....

Trainfreak:I encourage you to go ahead and order your KHP2. Reasons:1. Why wait on MSTS2? (It could be delayed for ?? long?)2. You're not talking about a huge amount of money.3. There's no "sin" is having both MSTS 1 and MSTS 2 installed on your machine to enjoy at your chosing for however long you desire.4. Supporting the MSTS1 payware vendors NOW is more important than ever before. (Because of all the OTHER guys that just did the same thing you did: Cancelled plans to spend money with them. We DO want them to be around when MSTS 2 comes out, right? 3D-Perfection has already posted a statement at their website trying to quell the fears and potential suspended purchasing by consumers.)5. Even after MSTS 2 is released, it may be that for quite some time MSTS 1 will be the only way you'll be able to run your Alco's, or certain favorite steamers, etc. Plus, they may NEVER get made/converted for MSTS 2.6. Lastly, from the threads I've read, MS and KUJU have alledgedly indicated routes will be OKAY. (Either directly compatible or via a converter.) Now, what we DON'T know is how routes with add-on track systems will be affected. My GUESS is that they MAY NOT be compatible, because of the tsection.dat mess. It is important to note that to date ALL released payware routes use DEFAULT track ONLY. In view of MSTS 2, I'll bet that is a GOOD THING, (IMHO). So, go for it. Get it and enjoy it. After all, at BEST, you're talking nearly 6 months before any HOPE of MSTS 2 being released. You will have thoroughly enjoyed KHP2 by that time, and will be ready for something new.Hope this helps.Andre Ming

RE: Uhhh.....

Vulcan Foundry, one may interpret it both ways:> We will support both, Train Sim 1, as well as version 2 software. Yes, different animal (hopefully improved in some aspects, such as overall stability of things!) unless it wouldn't make sense to call it "two"> Our software packages will be updated to support version 2 of Train Simulator, and the updates will be made available shortly after version 2 is released.- will be updated: To me, this is important, as it does not say re-done, but updated, i.e. some - maybe all, maybe many, maybe just not that many, who knows? - existing things can be converted or imported as they are.- will be made available shortly: Also good news, indicating either that Kuju / M$ fed commercial add-on producers already with info on the way on how to update to MSTS 2, and this information either gave them ample time to react in case conversion were difficult, or comforted them that conversion will not be too difficult, as the word "shortly" implies to me (shortly might be anything from a couple of weeks to a few months, but not a year or so, I guess).Still: All we debate now is only educated guessing, so lets enjoy the endangered species of MSTS 1 bugs while they are still with us Lukas a.k.a Swissie

Hmmm...this is interesting in the form of "high" anxiety. Perhaps we'll know more from reports after E3 this month. If we're lucky, we'll be enlightened...just a little.Kip

probably what they mean by their models will be updated into msts 2 is that they will re-export them into the sim when the required plug-ins are released. So say if you made a model in GMAX and you exported it into msts, you could always export it into msts2 if they release a plugin.

RE: Uhhh.....

Lets hope the Nalws steam pack works in M$ts2. Every game microsoft has made in the past seem to be compatble to the next version with tools or just uses the same format.
