I think this has been discussed before at Crotrainz BVE forum, but since it is gone, I'll have to ask again here.
I remember the highest you can get for frame rates is 30fps. But, now, I can only get 21fps maximum, no matter what route, what train, what BVE version, etc... But for drawing distance, no matter what I set it, it still remains at 21fps, except, at 600m, where it keeps on changing from 21 to 22 and back again, but mostly on 21fps.
I had none of these problems, surprisingly, with my 667mhz! I could get 30fps on almost any route, with the drawing distance at 300m of course...
My system specs
P4 2.53Ghz
768MB RAM
64MB ATI Radeon 9000
WIn XP Home

The frame rate is capped at 25FPS with Windows XP. However if you play something in Media Player and then leave it running while you use BVE, then a frame rate of 30FPS can be achieved. You graphics card will have more effect on the frame rate than your processor. I have a P4 1.7Ghz with a GeForce 4 graphics card and Windows XP. I can get 25-30FPS on X-City south as far as Five Ways.

But I notice, in the bewlo messages, they say they can get 30FPS with WinXP Home.

RE: FPS cap

I usually get 29fps except areas like New Street in Birmingham X-City when it will drop to 8fps. WinXP home, P4 1.8ghz, Nvidia Geofce 2 MX400 with 64mb. this is without opening media player prior to running, which I did try but it did not appear to make any difference. Oh, drawing distance is set to the max.

I get 21fps as a maximum on two routes that I have put on here. I have Microsoft Windows XP Pro (with XP Office Pro) an ATi Raedon 9000 128MB Graphics Card, AMD Athlon™ 1.67 Ghz, 512MB DD RAM.
I have however optimised my PC for higher performance rather than the fancy graphical rubbish. One thing I haven't been able to do is get it to run in full screen (640x480) I've tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows 2000. Does anyone have any tips?

Haven't tried the Piccadilly yet, though I'm pretty sure there are some lines that cause occasional framerate drops but I can't pinpoint which ones right now.---PCJ

Can you really tell the difference between 21 and 30fps anyways?Once you're above 20, it's all basically fluid movement.Tim Frost

>Once you're above 20, it's all basically fluid movement. A lot of difference. The older movies was at 18fps, the present one is at 24fps. So at 18fps, the stuttering is not that obvious, but once above 24fps, it is totally smooth.

RE: FPS cap

I have to disagree with that. In non-capped games where you can hit upwards of 60-100fps you notice it. However it's kind of like a bonus whereas anything lower than 15-20 is nasty.

RE: FPS cap

\are the upper end frame rates real. I ask, because up until now, I have been running on a lower end machine. I would get lower reported frame rates of 5 fps when I know they were lower. The real rates were often 1 or 2 fps on some routes. \with the newer machine I get a constant 21 reported, or 30 running media player, but I do not really notice a difference. Is the number shown real or just the best BVE can show.

I'm wondering how are you guys checking FPS in BVE. Are you using the FRAPS program or is this feature in BVE. I'm not having a promblem with frame rates with BVE but would like to know what I'm getting with my system. My Computer Specs:Asus P4T533-R
Pentium 4/2.8GHz(overclocked to 3.15GHz)
1024 MB PC4200 memory

RE: FPS cap

You won't notice much difference past 25 fps. The human brain creates a smooth running picture in your head through 25 frames per second which is why most TVs scan 25 times every second to produce an image every 1/25th of a second and produce a flowing picture in your head.Anything above 25 fps is just your system doing well! Nuff boring OT facts for now..

RE: FPS cap

OKLets specify the myths and the truth....Stoopid person you might want to try the Media player trick if using Win2k or XP remember to load media player, play a file, stop the file but DO NOT close media player then start bve then you should get the mandatory 31 fps that will go with your impressive system specs!Where shall we startThere is NO i repeat NO fps cap within BVE, if that was the case then it would run insanely fast on low spec systems due to its simple graphics engine... The reason for the maximum 31fps is simply due to the fact that the direct x implementation of bve is very very primative, and its unable to take advantage of new technologies! In addition to this BVE uses BMPs for its textures..... Can anybody tell me what game they have played uses BMPS for textures??.... Thats right none! The reason is BMPs cause an incredible amount of overhead on the system thats why games like medal of honour and battlefield 1942 and unreal use proprietry formats... they are smaller and dont require much resources to process...Why doesent mackoy implement these you might ask?? There could be 2 reasons for this... he may not know how to? or the more likely is that if he does route and texture development will be much harder for us end users.. i personally think it is the latter, mackoy has more then prooved to me that he is one hell of a talanted guy with his continued development of bve, further more would some of the younger users know how to create proprietry textures outside of MS Paint and PSP? eventually maybe yes but not straight away.Is bve affected by the video card in the system.... in terms of framerate this is a BIG FAT NO... bves framerate is in no way affected by the video card you have in your system what does affect bve as regards the video card i will explain shortly. but it doesent matter if i have an 8mb matrox g200 or my 64mb radeon 8500 bve runs a constant 30fps.... Framerate is affected only by operating system and CPU Speed. For video cards what affects bve is the type of video card, hence the different texture patches availiable with the common routes. Remember that a video card can only draw pictures within a rectangular or square frame. in addition to that some video cards use different rgb values for transparency, hence the reason some of you see square blocks around your catenary. The older video cards such as the TNT2 and Voodoo series and cards of that generation had set values for transparency, which varied unfortunatly between each manufacturer, the newer cards have whats known as a transparency tolerance, what that means is a few extra values around the true transparent values will show as transparent.Memory also plays a big part in bve its not how fast it is but how much you can use remember the bmp textures take a lot of space! The reason W2k and XP can handle the x city 1.2 and the WJMKv2 routes is because the first generation operating systems like windows 98 and windows ME can only use 256mbs of ram, they will access upto 512mbs of ram beyond that area they simply cannot take advantage of it. Windows 2000 and windows XP are designed to take advantage and use 3GB+ of system memory, the more ram you have access to the quicker textures can be loaded!Remmeber if bve runs slow lower your draw distance, if its still slow and you can afford it and more importantly want to, then its time to upgrade. a 30 fps capable system can be achieved for very very little money!Mr Gizmo

So probably, objects as well, although I haven't tried yet.Win98/ME can use 1GB RAM, if you ask in the General forum here, they should be able to tell you how to.I have achived 29-30fps with my Win98 on X-city Win9x version, XP version causes too much stutter on taht machine. My specifications were
PIII 667Mhz
128MB RAM
16MB Diamond S3 Video Card
No Media Player running in background
300m drawing distanceSo Win98 can achieve 31fps without the need of Windows Media Player? To check your frame rate, press Shift+F3 two times or Ctrl+F3 one time if developer mode is off. If developer mode is on, press Shift+F3 two times(same) or Ctrl+F3 three times.

RE: FPS cap

Stoopid PersonThe fix you are describing simply solves the crash problem windows 98 suffers when working with >512mbs of ram, it still cannot take advantage of any memory beyond that. Windows ME was based on windows 98 and 2000, and suffers the same limitation but to a lesser extent. I am aware of the fix being a systems engineer for a CAD company, so no need to look in the general forum GIF and JPGs you cant really use jpgs as textures as they look very poor when exported, and im not sure if bve can use them as textures, has anyone tried?Mr Gizmo
