Yeah, sorry about that, had to pull the files for a while to sort a silly marker/limit problem.... anyway all is fixed now and the files are back up... as for the SLW server getting swamped, well that's not too likely CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

Thanks for the nice words, more is to come If you want an old-style air brake, I can fit one back on for you, but the train would be harder to keep to time on account of the now-higher linespeed and therefore the requirement to have more powerful and faster-reacting brakes, you would have a hard time with a single-step straight-air type I reckon... of course if you use Bve 2.3.1 you have a progressive air brake which makes life a little easier. The new linespeeds are to take account of future traffic, which *might* include passenger service from a station near the Coalex depot. However, I would like to have a mini-poll here in this topic, so the question is :-"Can you nominate your preferred favourite American diesel engine that would realistically work this line on coal freight?"...bearing in mind Alcos were built under license in Australia by Goodwin, amongst others, so anything they made could be 'imported' or even built natively... unless you get really outrageous and suggest we throw timescales out the window and put a brace of SD70's on there LMK what your thoughts are Ciao Saxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

RE: Heavy Coal v2.6 now Available

I'm the master of single-step straight-air
so no problem with air for me.
I like so much single-step air that I have self modified some locos ( ej cl101 incl. press.meter),
also if you are too busy I can modify myself the brakes part of your brand-new CO-CO,
I wonder if I can make a key wrapper program to ease one step air braking with non 2.3 bve.
and the mini poll ,I really don't know American locos so I can 't answer,
perhaps suggest if it 's possible with bve get the sound of two diesel in
tandem ?

RE: Heavy Coal v2.6 now Available

I can now see why everybody wanted it, its great, gave it a quick run ... but must do a full run from end to end soon.As for the brakes there correct accordinbg to Locomotives of Australia By Leon Oberg page 222, the 46 class is powered by 2 motor-generator sets driving 6 traction motors and produce 3,780 HP(Higest in Australia) and all have regenerative bracking a device reverses generator field thus acting as a retarding force. It can hold a 590 ton load at 25 MPH on a 1:33 grade. Pretty good I think.Thank you Wulf_9 and I hop the information is intresting.Tom

Thank you Tom,Yes that IS an impressive performance, but excuse me for saying that it looks as if you are describing a diesel loco, see here :->the 46 class is powered by 2 motor- generator sets <which would imply an internal combustion power source.... the NSWGR_46 as originally described is an overhead DC electric running at 1500V and the updated MV_Class46 in the Heavy Coal package is the same basic spec.Ciao Saxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

RE: Heavy Coal v2.6 now Available

>the 46 class is powered by 2 motor- generator sets < I wonder if that doesn't refer back to the regenerative
braking? Each unit is capable of being used as a motor and
and generator. I agree that you usually see that terminology
reserved for diesel/electric locomotives. I averaged around 25-30
kph on the uphill run at full throttle, and on the downhill run I
was able to hold 65kph with the reverser set at "B" and the throttle
at "6-8" and not use the service brakes. It's really a great
train and the route was fantastic! And Wulf, for the record I caught 2 torpedoes before getting
cranked down to 35 kph. Very nice touch! Tomorrow I'm going to use the GE C40-8 on the route and see what
it's like. Though I'm going to have to fool around with the files
to get the load right! Christopher

Chris,Nice one, you discovered the perils of falling asleep at the controls then If you feel like saying 'I wish this train could go faster' then I reckon you need to get rid of the speed mania with the HST or Adelante, then the HC will seem quite relaxing If you have a C40-8 I would like to see it, PM me the info if you plz?CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

RE: Heavy Coal v2.6 now Available

Hi wulfI downloaded the files just yesterday but I didn't have a chance to drive the route till some minutes ago. The updated version has given a nice refresh to the route. Point: The drivers must have a very bad record when driving in rail-working areas because some rifle shots (???) are heard as the train exits the tunnel before reaching the workers...!!! (nice...hehe ). The train performs very well: When driving uphill, it keeps a speed of 25-32 km (the markers indicating 65km speed limit or watch speed look kind of ironic... ), then, driving downhill, the braking system is fine and the driver can very well maintain the speed limits using the 2nd or 3rd position of the brakes.About the diesel engine I will it a try with GE C40-8 and tell you about it.Nice work (as expected ) Wulf

Hehe, smile, those 'rifle shots' are not the natives firing at you, LOL They are explosive caps which the track repair crews place on the rails to warn approaching trains that there is a section of track immediately in front under repair, so that drivers have an unmistakable warning that they are there (probably in response to an engineer being hit by a train at some point)... hope this helps to remove your feelings of danger Thanks for the nice words, if you are all enjoying the route/train then my aim is met!"If you like it now, you'll learn to love it later" as Robbie Robertson said, the HC v3 will build on this release and include many refinements CiaoSaxon Locomotive Works - "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer"http://www.zodiac-infosystems.co.uk/rail/bve

RE: Heavy Coal v2.6 now Available

(long anorakish post)>the 46 class is powered by 2 motor- generator sets <In case anyone is still interested a motor-generator set is indeed a purely electrical machine. It's just what it says, an electric motor driving a generator, and allows a DC supply to be stepped up or down - in other words it has the same function as a transformer in an AC setup.MG-sets are common on older DC EMUs, where they supply auxiliary circuits, such as lighting, at voltages safely lower than the traction voltage. However, they were also used to control DC electric locomotives in place of the conventional traction resistances, because they allowed the loco to run slowly for long periods (e.g. pulling a goods train) without the problem of heating in the resistors and the associated waste of power. The voltage across the traction motors was controlled by varying the excitation current of the generator part of an MG-set and hence the voltage produced by the generator. (Excitation current flows through the field coils of a generator to produce a magnetic field. It is much smaller than the traction current and so could be controlled with smaller resistors and less wasted power.) When the locomotive was starting from rest, with negligible back-emf from its traction motors, the generator was connected so as to oppose the supply voltage. As speed and back-emf increased, the generator excitation was progressively reduced until, eventually, the full supply voltage would be applied to the traction motors. In some designs, the generator was then reconnected to augment the supply voltage and its excitation increased again, until the supply voltage was effectively doubled. The net result, as with resistance control, was a fairly constant current through the motors (and hence tractive effort) across a wide speed range. This system is known as 'buck and boost' and was used by Alfred Raworth in the three locomotives built for the Southern Railway between 1941 and 1948, and in the later BR Class 71 locos. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the British-built 46 Class, of the same general era, also used it, but annoyingly, I can't find any more detailed info on the Web.Anyone know any more?Simon(/long anorakish post)
