Well, strictly speaking this engine was originally designed and built by the Lugansk Locomotive Works in Russia, albeit to a requirement by the Hungarian state railways. However, this engine proved to be a huge success, resulting in a total production number of almost 5,400 units. They were used not only in Hungary, but by several former East Bloc railroads, even including the Soviet state railways. Powered by a 2,000-hp twelve-cylinder two-stroke diesel motor from the Kolomna Locomotive Works, this locomotive might have been one of the loudest engines - 105 dB - ever to roam the rails, since it was originally not fitted with mufflers. Engineers of the East German state railways thus called it the "Taiga drum".Anyway, the virtual engine was designed by our Hungarian friends from www.ms-trainsimulator.hu , is painted in the colours of the first M62 delivered to Hungary, and has a custom cab and sounds. It is still in a late beta stage, meaning that the cab has yet to be animated. Apart from that, however, it is basically ready to run. RE: New M62 Russian diesel engine available!
Uhm...basically you could hook it up to any European-style freight cars, since it is still widely used by Eastern European railroads. The M 62 was also used for passenger trains, though only in summertime, since it was not equipped with train heating. However, be sure NOT to hook it up to contemporary Russian cars. Even though the M62 was designed and built in Russia, locomotives for non-Soviet railroads were fitted with buffers and chain couplers, whereas those scheduled to go to the Russian state railways had the SA3 automatic coupler and no buffers and were built to the 5' Russian gauge.Interestingly, "M 62" was actually not a typical Soviet designation. Had it been designated to Russian standards, it would have been called "TE 62" or something like that - "T" meaning "teplovoz", "diesel engine", and "E" denoting electric power transmission. However, since the Hungarian state railways had been very influential on the design of this locomotive, the Hungarian class number M 62 got stuck as the type number, and was even adopted by the Russian railways. Well, as far as I could observe, there *are* cab sounds, though they are rather quiet - since the M 62's cabs were very well shielded against noise.
