Feb-09-02, 07:01 PM (EDT) "Any CSX workers here? In Ohio even better!" LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 07:03 PM (EST)I am perhaps thinking about becoming a train engineer. I live in Middle west part of ohio about half between lima and dayton. A CSX line is only about 3 miles away and I go by it everyday going to school. So if I were to get a job it would most likely be at CSX. What is the starting salaries for US engineers?? I am 18 and currently still in high school and right now planning on going into computer programming. But I would like to be a engineer perhaps always has been a dream. Just don;t know the facts. My e-mail is Eagleknight_skyrider@yahoo.com any information is helpful thanks =) Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

OK I think its QSTATION.ORG or when you put in the web address look in the web directory one of them should say QSTATION:BNSF Resource click on that then go to the home page. Feb-11-02, 04:41 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: Any CSX workers here? In Ohio even better!" Well, I used to be an engineer for CSX out of Cincy and going south and I left it to get into computers. But, if you want a RR job with CSX, first you gotta pay 4,00 to attend Cincy Tech's conductor school. Then CSX will ask you where you want to work, and then send you to work somewhere else (with your senority being at home where you wanted to be). Then get prepared to be thrown into the real world in a real hurry. You will train along side men who have been working for 20 or 30 years and will gladly tell you "I love my job but, I do not see why you love it". After spending a few weeks training you will then be marked up on a board where you get to sit at home, that is except on weekends, holidays, nights, rainy days, snowy days, too hot days and days when someone else just doesn't feel like coming to work. Also be prepared to work with men who either do not want to work with you or do want to work with you becuase "they might learn a thing or two from you". It also helps to never tell anyone you are a railfan, if you want alot of people on your badside, that is a good way to do it. Now of course, this is all while you are a conductor so, lets no forget walking train in the middle of a cold winters night with the snow falling, the wind blowing, and you carrying a brake hose, brake pipe wrench, a hammer and chisel, extra plastic ties, and of course your lantern and radio. So now lets move on to 2 years when you might get to go to engineer's school. Now, before you left for school you were working quite regularly and might have been able to hold a regular 3rd trick job but, now it is off to engineer's school and back to the bottom. Of course, being an engineer is a very mentally taxing job. You must always be aware of where you are, what your signal is, where the next singal is, what slow order is coming up, where the next flags are, how much tractive efford your engines have, what kind of engines you have (so you know how long they are rated for). Also keep in mind that you will be calling signals and blowing horns, turning headlights down when meeting trains, doing calendar day inspections and you will also be telling the conductor what to do alot when you first start out (remember those engineers that you worked with when you first started, well, now you are working with conductors that just started). There are also WAY too many things to mention here but, I think the most important thing about going to work for the railroad is this.....Working for the railroad isn't just a job, it is your life. You will be on call 24/7, that doesn't mean you will work everyday either. You will also be laid off, there is no way around it, every railroad employee gets laid off at one time or another. Well, I hope this helped you out some Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
