When I took the Builder last June it consisted of:2 P42DCs
Heritage Baggage car
Transition Sleeper
2 Sleeper cars
Diner
Coach
Coach/Smoking
Sightseer Lounge
Coach/Baggage
Coach
Sleeper
4 Express CarsThat was on the trip out to Portland from Chicago. Coming back it was the same except we had about 5 express cars and some Roadrailers at the tail end after joining up with the Seattle section in Spokane.Regards,

RE: Empire Builder

When I took that train in 1996 it had 2 F40s on the point. The Seattle section was from the diner forward, and Portland was from the lounge car to the rear of the train. On arrival in Portland, the train had one MHC on the rear. It's amaizing how times have changed.

It's similar to this date, although the motive power is different. The Seattle section at this time consists of one of the P42s, the Heritage Baggage car, the transition sleeper, 2 forward sleepers, the diner, coach/smoking car, and a coach. The Portland section consists of the other P42, the sightseer lounge, the coach/baggage car (we were in that one), the last coach, and the sleeper. I believe we had 1 MHC on the tail-end, not quite sure though. I was a bit disappointed when I woke up and the coach/smoking car was gone. I'm a smoker and we had to wait until we stopped somewhere for more than a couple minutes before we could smoke. I believe we got off at Pasco, the Dalles, and our trip then ended at Portland where we caught the Coast Starlight down to California. That's another great train BTW, beautiful scenery, especially on the return trip. One neat thing about being on that Portland section, besides the fact that it traversed the banks of the Columbia, was that the sightseer was right behind the P42. The smell of the exhaust was very strong and I was in pure Heaven. -=D I wish I had had my DAT recorder with me at the time as I could have gotten great samples. It was a great trip. Regards,

I remember from an earlier thread that that the Empire Builder had 3 P42's. When I took it in 2001 I only remember that it had 2 P42's and an F40.Chris

I can assure you there were only 2 P42s on the point going both ways, even though there was a winter storm in the Marias Pass area (middle of June mind you). The 2 P42s were more than enough to keep us at track speed. Here's a picture of us stopped at Havre, Montana, just before getting to the area we all know so well. This is westbound:First Unit

RE: Empire Builder

Do they wye/twirl the trailing Jenny at Spokane, or do both Jennies go to Seattle and another Jenny takes over the Portland section in Spokane?

I don't know how they get the second unit turned, but it does get turned and each section gets one of the P42s to haul it the rest of the way to Seattle and Portland. Heading west, the Spokane stop is late in the evening and I was asleep at the time the train was split. But, I did wake up in time to see the Seattle section leave and it only had 1 Jenny on the point. I was awake, however, on the return trip, when we got to Spokane (was getting drunk with some young women I met at the Portland station and who were in the same sleeper as us) and the Seattle section was already there waiting for us with 2 units on the point. When we left, after the sections were joined, those same 2 units were still at the point, with our original Jenny brought up from Portland staying behind. I was a bit confused, so maybe someone from the area could elaborate more. Regards,

When I took it, just before school started this year, it had 3 P42DC's, one P40, one F40, and a BNSF SD40-2! Man!
