LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-03 AT 04:20 AM (EDT)

Forwarded from Yahoo! Groups - Shortline.SECURITY ALERT FOR MARCH 20, 2003 @ 8:00 A.M. EST REMAINS AT LEVEL 2 FOR THE
RAIL INDUSTRY. WHEN/IF THIS ALERT LEVEL CHANGES YOU WILL BE PROMPTY
NOTIFIED.STOLEN DERAILS Since January 01/2003, nine derails have been stolen in the
East Texas area. Seven from the Greenville, Texas area, including three
from Hunt Yard (DGNO RR), one from the Rubbermaid Plant (DGNO RR), two from
Bonus Crop (DGNO RR), and one from the KCS RR yard. One has been stolen
from Dalrock Siding (DGNO RR) near Lake Ray Hubbard and one was stolen from
Winnsboro, Texas (KCS RR) during the week of March 10, 2003. All of the
stolen derails were the portable hinged type. As you know, a derail is a
device used to derail a piece of equipment from the railroad track. It is
used to protect main lines sidings, branch lines, and industrial leads by
preventing equipment from accidentally rolling onto the main rail route from
a secondary track. What makes these thefts a bit alarming is the nature and
intended use of this equipment. Theft of this equipment is unusual, since it
has little value outside of the rail industry and serves no known purpose
other than its intended use. The use of derails is strictly controlled by
federal regulations and company policy and when not in the hands of an
experienced person could be potentially dangerous. Your crews should be
advised of these thefts and be on the look out for them while operating
their trains. Suggest that you use this notice as part of your job
briefings for all of your crews.

Thanks for the warning. I doubt any terrorists would be up in our area, there IS a CN main going right to St. Paul. However, im clueless as to why anyone would steal derails, theyre only meant for derailing runaways and moving cars that pose a threat to traffic, right?

There are trains that travel daily in this area through several metropolitan areas hauling hazardous materials to and from a major chemical industry. Now, if that thief is a radical anti-war type or a terrorist and has his hands on one of the portable derailers!SRV Ron

Norfolk and Southern. I don't know a line by name so I just call them by the railroad company name. So if I saw an CSX Line, I would call it an CSX Line and so forth.

The correct name is Norfolk Southern, there is no "and" in the name. There once was a Norfolk & Southern, it was shortline in the middle atlantic area.

I know this is off-topic, but I couldn't resist.A few years ago the Ohio Turnpike Commission began erecting signs on bridges along the road indicating the name of the road/railroad being crossed. All NS crossings were labelled "Norfolk & Southern" which caused considerable embarassment when someone finally noticed the error several months later. All those signs have since been removed but we Ohio taxpayers still had to pay for that blunder.I still occasionally hear tv news reporters make this same mistake.

First this is not good news as I doubt these have interest to railroadania collectors.
Portable derails are used in cases where a railroad needs temporary protection that the portables provide, in many cases where this protection is needed continuously(ie where an industrial siding meets the main line) the railroad has a permenant derail setup in place.
Trains magazine(IIRC) back during the Carter/Regan campain did a story on the POTUS (President Of The United States) train and all the security measures around it, one of those measures was at anyplace another railroad crossed the tracks at grade the Secret Service had portable derails locked to the other railroads track.Gary S

They forget about if they went into the hands of an experienced person. If you're doing 60 in a train full of chemicals, and you come around a curve and see one where it would not usually be, all you can do is scream, "Oh s###," throw it into emergency, and start praying.
I know how bad this could be, I watched a derailment of a Wisconsin Central train a few years back, I forget where, but that was one of the largest explosions I had ever seen. Also, I'm not sure if anyone here remembers, but May of last year, a Guilford train had a car of hydrochloric acid (remmeber how many times your high school science teacher told you to be careful with it) dump more than a few gallons of it into the Concord River, a local river. I remember it because it was at the other end of my street, plus I live on the same river (my street parallels it), and my school bus had to take a long detour. Trust me, it wasn't good. Guilford has been getting hell from the locals ever since. The Federal Railroad Administration actually sent some experts to a meeting of my neighborhood's neighborhood group to explain about what was being carried on the trains. There were calls for Guilford to alert City Hall for every car that entered the city (you can see the problems with that plan, then they would have to call every town because they would want the service too).

RE: Stolen Derails........

that is a bit of a worry. sort of along the same lines I found a pallet placed on the tracks along with some branches while I was waiting for a train last week. The pallet fortunally wasn't placed in a way that it would probaly do any damage but i removed it anyway. probaly just some kids fooling around. It does make me worry a little bit though as there are a lot of military movements through town especially since the war got going. joePrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 40
