RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

Some random ramblings of my experiences. You can use either type of monitor with XP with no problem. I currently run ME on one computer and XP Home on the laptop. Performance is VERY stable on both machines, (512 Meg memory on both, AMD processors on both). Be aware that XP is a real memory hog. The laptop came with XP Pro and I never could get it to run MSTS without problems. I hated using passwords too, and since I dont live with a bunch of weasels, I dont really need them. Nor do I need to run a massive network, so I read the info on the Microsoft site and switched to XP Home. I have had absolutely no problems with MSTS since I switched. My desktop runs a PNY Geforce Ti4600 and 19" Philips 109b that I paid only 180 dollars (U.S) for. It is a true flat screen conventional CRT. The laptop obviously has a TFT display w/integrated video maxed out to 32 Meg. I don't really like the overpriced lcd, TFT, plasma, and whatever they are using other types for gaming. The seem to have a lag or blur on moving stuff. The best thing for you to do is to go to CompUSA, Staples, or Circuit City where you can view several types side by side.

Windows ME can't hold a candle to Windows XP for stability. The only difference between Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home is the networking capabilities and a few other odd's and ends, they both share the exact same base code and system requirements. Windows XP handles memory extremely well, you just have to have a reasonable amount in todays terms, (256Mb or more.)

RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

The Gateway folks told me to use a CRT for gaming...for them that is not a flat screen. I do use XP and haven't experienced any problems with that OS. Michael

RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

Windows XP is the most reliable and stable OS Microsoft has yet released. Minimum requirements for good performance of the OS would be 256Mb of RAM, greater than 512Mb for any OS for best performance of MSTS. Whether to use a flat panel vs. a CRT depends on how deep your pockets are and how strapped for space. A CRT, especially 19" or larger will be a lot less cash than a comparable sized Flat Panel.

RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

The 19" Philips monitor I mentioned HAS a perfectly flat screen, and it IS a CRT type monitor. There are a lot of flat CRT types out there now. Of course, some minimum wage salesman working in a discount store may not be aware of other types of monitors available. And as for stability, ME hasn't given me a lockup or blue screen for several MONTHS. I have had no more trouble with running MSTS or other games on ME than with XP. If you read instructions and load stuff carefully, and troubleshoot before you start with the various tools available here, any operating system will perform well.

RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

go with Windows XP. I've rarely had problems with it. I was to have windows XP Professional on my computer but someone goofed, so I got like 500 dollars taken off my price of my computer. I have XP Home though which was put on instead. Also get a CD-RW or a DVD-RW drive. This way you won't have to cherry pick the library if your computer ever crashes if you back up the files you like onto CD. i don't have a flatscreen monitor but do have a 20" one.

RE: new Monitor, Win-XP

Go with XP ya cant beat it for stability and memory management..
as for monitors id go with a flat screen crt.. I just got a 22 inch
Viewsonic Professional Series P220f , and the picture quality is excellent..but keep in mind these large monitors are costly and heavy
and work best with a good graphics card..Patm41
