I am on the BN route between Springfield, and Tulsa, and today just west of Springfield, a 4 engine train went through.
In the lead was a blue, cab forward, had lots of glass
and on the side it said CEFX with the number 2016 under it.
this is the second time I have seen it here, but didnt realize it was 'living' on this route..looked like the nost of a GP... but...
Any IDEAS??? Thanks...

CEFX is the railway leasing portion of CIT Group/Capital Finance. Railways can lease a locomotive from them, and then return when they are finished. They also lease railway cars.Try a search for CEFX you might come up with a roster of their locomotives.- Andrew

RE: I saw an engine-now, what was it?

They kinda remind me of the MK1200C's. The ATSF and UP had them. Now its the GP15/20D. It is kinda ugly, but crews like the cab. The ones that the PTRA of Texas has, they sound like a lawn mower or tractor, or a 18 wheeler. Guess it was that CAT motor. If you think thats ugly, you should see the "green goat"

RE: I saw an engine-now, what was it?

The American diesel locomotive tends to get uglier and less interesting to watch with each successive generation. We started out with the classic F/E unit carbody and have now degenerated to this. Where will it all end? How ugly can we make them? Is there no place for aesthetics in the locomotive marketplace? I fear, gentlemen, that this is probably not the worst we can do. But it is beginning to push the envelope.ROCK

RE: I saw an engine-now, what was it?

for what purpose? in the late 40's and 50's, they worried about 'streamlined'- IE air resistance...
smoother meant less power needed, and easier at speed
now, they got POWER- does it matter they are pushing a flat wall at 60 MPH? not really...cause the major wind resistance is the small front of the engine...yes the cars have some but not that much- so its no longer a matter...
PLUS to make streamlined, means forming curves, which means more body work and expense...

In addition, I've heard that the configuration of the GP15D/GP20D (and the MK1200C as well) offers *excellent* all-around views with regard to switching moves. From a safety and efficiency point of view, this is simply a case of function dictating form.Henry

RE: I saw an engine-now, what was it?

Mr. Rockisland,
Railroads are not concerned about "looks pleasing to the eye" They are more focused on efficiency, reliability, horsepower for its intended service, and several other things. They could really care less about what you or I think about their engines/paintschemes. They do however offer good all around visibility and have comfortable seats, heat, AC and crews seem to like them, so I guess thats what matters.
