Has anyone been to the 'Northlandz' Model Railroad? – image 1

About two months ago, I happened to be watching the Travel Channel and saw what they called one of the ten best places to go in the northeast, the place was called "Northlandz" and is located in Flemington, New Jersey. When my parents and I were in the Northeast on vacation, my dad and I decided to stop by. The man who owns Northlandz is a millionaire and built this huge building to house his 2 acre railroad. I was very excited to see this railroad until I saw the price... $18.50 for one adult admission! My dad and I put that beside and thought that it was worth it... IT WASN'T!!! When we walked in we first saw the sloppiest done mountains we have ever seen on a model railroad! Also, we saw the most pathetic painting skills on everything we saw. The tracks where poorly connected resulting in the longest train being five cars! Not to mention many trains were operating unrealistically backwards and about 95% of the bridges were 'floating'. We were disgusted! We vowed never to go back there again! What I'm wondering is if any of you have been to the Northlandz model railroad in Flemington, New Jersey, and had the same horrible experience.

RE: Has anyone been to the 'Northlandz' Model Railroad?

Yea I went about three four years ago, the same year it opened. Back then admissions with a coupon was only $10.50 , a better deal. It's not the most sophisticated model work I've seen but I wouldn't call it a total piece of crap, well maybe at 18.50? The trains were longer too.

RE: Has anyone been to the 'Northlandz' Model Railroad?

I went there many years ago, probably soon after it opened. It was cheaper, as pennsyfan points out, and I also recall longer trains. I went after seeing the layout written up in Model Railroader and I went knowing it wasn't going to be a realistic model of a railroad system, but more a vast toy train layout in HO scale. I wasn't dissapointed, it was awesome in it's scale and complexity and had an amazing amount of detail considering the size of it. I'm sorry you went expecting more, and for that price, you have every right to expect a lot. I think it's appeal is more towards the average person, and not the true model railroader. If you ever find yourself back in the Eastern part of the country, see if you can visit the Model Railroad Club, Inc, in Union, NJ. http://www.tmrci.com/ They have a huge layout that is very prototypical with some great scenery. I haven't been there since they expanded their building a long time ago. You could also visit the Rensselaer Model Railroad Society's layout in Troy, NY http://railroad.union.rpi.edu/ This is the ultimate in realistic operation and design. I've never been there, but I have read many articles in the model mags.Cliff
