I just saw this on my local news, I dont know how much it's affecting the RR's, but they said Cajon Pass is on fire(due to wildfires). They didnt go any further than showing a clip of trees burning and a substitle saying it was Cajon Pass. Just thought I'd bring it to attention of this fourm. If anyone has any further news, or I've made a mistake, please enlighten me.
Thanks

Well i dont live in Colorado i live in Nebraska ( yes we know bout the Colorado fires! LOL ) and i think it is going to be a bad one! its not that far from Denver! If the fire does reach Cajon Pass it probly wont get the tracks and if it does! well the chemicals they put the ties into makes it more fire proof!
but even if they do burn all that will burn would be
ties
wooden tresels!
and some other miscl equipmentUnion Pacific railorad is the the best railroad in the world!
if we want it to stay like that we better pay tribute!
Union Pacifc Railroad has ben around longer then any other MAJOR railroad. UP is the best MIX of all railroad stuff.

As a resident of Sydney the footage I saw felt very familiar. I hope and pray that no more homes are lost and heaven forbid any lives. All the best to anyone on the Denver area at the moment, and if you see a firefighter, thank them.......

Umm hate to inform you but the "stuff" they put on railroad ties isn't for fire-proofing.It's to keep them from rotting out as quickly.Railroad ties will burn and burn hot.Freddie A. HuffArchived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 3

Wait a minute......so what you're saying is, bcdef provided us with inaccurate information? I for one refuse to believe it. He's never lead us astray before, so I'm throwing my money in bcdef's corner. That man-boy is a treasured vault of precious railroad knowledge, and I pledge my support and unwaivering loyalty.

!

>so its A MIX! Chemicals to rot slower, yes!
But NOT fireproofing. The chemical to slow rotting is...CREOSOTE.Creosote burns hot, stinky, and really smoky. Ever see someone burn a railroad tie???

RE: Cajon Pass - On Fire

Cajon Pass is in S. Cali cause I was there once and I know a lil about it. So bcdef is wrong on one account.and the ties I have no clue about, but I assume the cemicals are to prevent rotting not to make them fire proof.

RE: Cajon Pass - On Fire

Most of the ties over Cajon Pass on both the BNSF mainline and the UP mainline (ex-SP) have a special mixture to prevent both rotting and make them fireproof. That mixture is called concrete! PatchCrew

bcdef I guess you didn't take time to read my signature did you ?I am a firefighter by profession and have just a tad bit of experience dealing with burning ties (just let the rr leave a pile and see how fast the hoodlums set them ablaze). There isn't any fire-proofing in the ties,it isn't a big concern of the railroad as most of the fires involving ties on the line were caused by spilled chemicals from tank cars and such.Freddie A. RE: Cajon Pass - On Fire

The same day as the Cajon Pass fire they reported that the Amtrak
trains north out of L. A. were canceled due to a brush fire on
Vandenberg A.F. Base (tracks run across the base)burning the crossties, so they don't seem to be very fireproof in the west.

RE: Cajon Pass - On Fire

While this fire is quite a bit larger than fires in the past, the Cajon area burns every year, to some degree. The area is mostly devoid of trees and is primarily chapperal which burns very hot and fast. CDF (California Div of Forestry) actually had 2 brush engines burnt over, causing the crews to deploy their fire shelters to avoid death or serious injuries. While the ties could suffer damage, the nature of fires in this area usually will affect signals and other trackside objects versus the roadbed itself. Mr. BCEDF, send me a map of all the trestles in Cajon Pass please. A number of fires in the past have been started by hot carbon spit out of the engine exhaust, which is one of the reasons the Cajon Lookout tower maybe rebuilt and returned to service.John

RE: Cajon Pass - On Fire

All three tracks through Cajon Pass are operational, though some have temporary bridges in place (very short spanned bridges). In one place the destroyed bridge was so small that the temporary "bridge" was just to fill in what was under it with ballast and lay a temporary section of track over it. (It seldom rains this time of year here, so hopefully it will be OK until they get the permanent fix in.)Judd Spittler
