LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-02 AT 03:22 PM (EDT)It's seem to becoming far too common.. When I have been train watching (especially in Ontario with all their highballing trains outside large cities), I see many people still race the trains.. I find myself having to close my eyes and hope nothing bad will happen..This is getting absolutely ridiculous!! (Although, I'll be careful here in not overrepresenting the number of crossing accidents that do occur, etc..) A GO Train accident in Ontario, 5 people dead occured this morning at a highway/grade crossing WITH BOTH catilever signals AND barriers:http://www.canada.com/national/story.asp?id={D887DA7D-91B5-4E05-89A8-6C6244A7FA07}
http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/06/07/GO_020607There are some reports that the barriers may not have been down.. It is a sad story, but even more disappointing is the fact that inorder for people to come to realize something, a tragedy has to occur..But EVEN if the crossing barriers were malfunctioning (which I am sure is quite unlikely because there are several safety measures in place with all the advancements in “computerized” technology in use) this should STILL be a wake-up call.. I'd put it very bluntly to those people who don't respect trains or their owns lives: STOP for the train IF YOU WANT TO LIVE.. Because I’m majoring in psychology and minoring in criminology, I’d actually find it very interesting as to exactly what is going through people’s heads or what motives they have that make them want to "race" trains!?Even if the barriers are NOT coming down but the red signals are just starting to engage and are on the delay before the barriers are activated, to me, that signal still means "STOP", NOT race through before the barriers catch you.. On crossings that ONLY use signals and masts (without barriers) one would think it would be best to stop immediately once they are activated (One CANNOT judge how close the train is to the crossing since there are no barriers to act as a reference point, to show the stage of activation that the crossing is in..) Would it not also be wise to stop as soon as the red signals flash even before the barriers come down at barrier guarded crossings?? Is it really worth it to die or become injured as opposed to being slightly late in our fast-paced lives!?And one last thing I’d like to add.. For those people who advocate for passing ordinances that restrict the use of train horns, I’d either like to ask them to recall the last train-vehicle accident or ask them if saving a life is more important to them than reduction in “noise” pollution!? (mind you, I may be biased on that opinion since I'm such a train and airhorn lover..)But, that’s my two cents worth for today..Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 1www.operationlifesaver.comArchived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 2www.operationlifesaver.ca(Hope this didn’t steal the thunder over the Amtrak controversy!) cdntrains Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 3 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 4 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 5 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 6 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 7 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 8 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 9 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 10 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 11 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 12 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 13 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 14 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 15 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 16 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 17 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 18 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 19 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 20 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 21 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 22 "must be trains in the blood"

Well said. On another subject, I remember my old Health teacher telling us how she read in the paper about three teenagers who had just graduated high school. Well, they decided to go out and buy some beer. They were smart enough to know not to drink and drive, so they pulled up in a parking lot just beside a train station. However, they were not smart enough to control their drinking and had a little too much. Then they remembered how in old movies that people were tied to railroad tracks and then would get rescued or something like that at the last second. Well, they got into an "I dare you..." game. They knew that the train was coming soon, so one person went and laid down on the tracks. When the train did come, the cowcatcher picked up and threw the kid up in the air. The kid hit something and died. The other two kids had their scholarships taken away.

RE: STOP!! That's if you want to live..

Tuesday this week I was waiting on a subway platform in Frankfurt. It was just a few minutes past noon, and there were hordes of kids coming from school on both platforms. They were bantering around like kids use to do these days, but then after a few minutes I could hardly believe my eyes when one of these chaps - maybe 12 or 13 years old from the looks of him - climbed from the northbound platform onto the tracks and jacka$$ed around. My blood almost froze on seeing this ... Luckily he climbed back onto the platform after a few moments, but from then on I kept an eye on him and his buddies until my own train (southbound) arrived. If he or any of his fellas had climbed onto the tracks again I promise you I would have screamed him back onto the platform! I swear I would NEVER have committed such outright IDIOCY when I was 13!!!

A true railfan slows down and waits for the crossing gates to start flashing, just so they could get stopped by a train......but that doesn't apply to those other twits...

RE: STOP!! That's if you want to live..

Yeah I always stop, sometimes before the gates come down, just because I hear the horn. I have also stopped before the gates get fully down, but this has caused a few cussing matches and a a lil finger flying so if possible I will pull of to the side. I had a freind trying to catch the bus and a train was coming and he didnt quite make it. I still have nightmares of him being thrown into some trees, because the train was moving about 45mph. After that I knew the meaning of STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN.
People a few minutes of your time will not hurt you. If ya dont beleive me, e-mail me, I have the clip of the young girl gettin clobbered by the BN E9 at Downers Grove IL. (The one that always cuts off right before the girl gets hit.) A grim reminder to stop look and listen.

Friend of mine told me of some place that had a video clip of an old lady getting off of a passenger train, walking towards the front (despite the engineer's warnings), and attempting to cross to the other side...then she got smacked by a 75mph passenger train coming up from behind first one..she didn't even have a chance to know what hit her...the camera was in a fixed position so it didn't follow the front of the train (thankfully)...*shudders* here in Maine school bus drivers will get their drivers licenses suspended if they do NOT stop at railroad tracks...That reminds me..there was a 'RealTV' thing where a highway patrol officer stopped a woman for crossing the tracks when the gates were down..She said she thought that that's what they were there for: to drive around.Swear ta God!She tried to file charges for police harrassment when he fined her a couple hundred bucks; she was completely unshakable in her belief that those gates were to be driven around, instead of being stopped at; even after the judge ruled in the officer's favor and revoked her license...She tried to appeal, and was denied...Jeez, the people these days...

I also have the clip of the lady getting hit by the BN train.***Attention*** In NO WAY do I condone the following website. There is graphic and questionable content, including the on-camera murder of Daniel Pearl. It does, however, serve as a disturbing reminder of the awesome power of a train. ***For anyone who has ever thought of not stopping, looking and listening at a rail crossing, go to http://www.ogrish.com then click on multi-media and download "Trainhit.zip" ***Warning*** This is the full clip, it does NOT cut out before the lady gets hit and thrown. It is not gory, there is no blood, but it IS highly disturbing. There are other train-related videos, but I do not have the stomach to watch them.Blake Harris

RE: STOP!! That's if you want to live..

Sorry folks,I didn't realize I'd end up creating such a grim (and for me) disturbing thread.. I guess I feel that way because it dates back to when I was a little kid at a train show, they'd display video tapes of train tragedies, and seeing that as a little kid, I was stunned and sick to my stomach.. Today I even feel sick to my stomach when I see mangled locos from a "no injury/casaulty" train-wreck.. I guess I created this thread in the hopes of somehow limiting the number of train accidents(!?) and also to show how I'm not confortable in having to see or hear about them..Like you said Blake, trains are indeed awesome powerful machines.. machines that need to be "respected", in my view.. I guess I placed this thread in the hopes of somehow getting the general public to realize that.. I just hope that enough has been said such that they now receive the message loud and clear..And one last thing: feel free to carry on this thread, if you'd like, but I won't be following it any further as I'd like to get back to some more positive and uplifting topics.. take care, cdntrains Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 159 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 160 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 161 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 162 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 163 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 164 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 165 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 166 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 167 Archived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 168 "must be trains in the blood"

I have seen it alot people going between the gates.
A couple of months ago we had an incident where 4 teens were killed when their car was struck by a train they were trying to beat.
It seem alot of people don't realize that todays trains including the disel-electric locos run pretty quiet especially if the throttle is set at idle and they are cruising along. There never used to be fencing along the CP tracks between Vancouver and Mission in BC but that changed soon after a 3rd fatality on the tracks after being struck by the West Coast Express. To give you an idea on how the WCE runs, the train is powered by one locomotive and the train doesn't turn around.
So it creates this,in the morning the train is basically pushed into Vancouver the last coach has lights on it because in the morning rush it becomes the lead of the train in the evening rush the locomotive becomes the lead.......either way this train is quiet.Believe it or not I too did stupid things around a train,in this case the train was stopped at a signal waiting to get into the yard and when it was a cylindrical hopper I went under the car between the hatches below not thinking of the train would leave at that time.
Now 18 years later it makes me shudder thinking of what could have happened. Theodore Webster

Two quick stories. As a member of our model railroad group at the Ohio State Fair in the 90's til last year, I got to ride on a couple of the Operation Lifesaver Specials from Cleveland to Columbus, Ohio. They had the engine set up with a camera on the nose and TV's in the cars so we could see the cars run the crossings. It was amazing. And, as a special surprise, the Ohio Highway Patrol and the county sheriffs were waiting for the train and actually pulled the cars over. I don't know if they actually got a ticket or not. I do recall that we were told the fine is $300 or $500 for running through a crossing once the engine sounds it horn or the lights begin flashing. We stopped counting somewhere around 50. And it's only about a 100 mile trip from Cleveland to Columbus on the train.Last night I was waiting at a crossing (as someone mentioned above, I had slowed to make sure I got stopped) I watched 5 cars run the crossing gates! I was really surprised. Maybe I could expect 1, but 5! What's wrong with people.MikeArchived thread - Read only Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 194

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-02 AT 01:09 AM (EDT)And here in WinnipegA 9 year old girl rides her bicycle around lowered crossing gates into the path of an oncoming Canadian Pacific train as people stopped waiting in there cars looked onward in horror.**********************************************************************************************************************************Jennifer and Stephanie Manthanarack had a very special message for their nine-year-old sister, Carly, who was seriously injured after being hit by a train on Sunday afternoon. "We told her we love her and we miss her and we hope she gets well soon," said Jennifer, 13, yesterday morning. "My parents called me this morning and told me she woke up and thanked us." Carly was pedalling her bicycle across the train tracks near Munroe Avenue and Prevette Street when she was struck by a train and dragged a short distance. Her foot was severed in the accident, and she was rushed to hospital in unstable condition. Jennifer said Carly was unconscious when she saw her in hospital on Sunday night, but had regained consciousness by yesterday morning. "She's not too bad," confirmed Kham Muangxong, Carly's aunt. "She remembers everything, and she remembers everybody." ENERGETIC KID Jennifer described her sister -- a student at Salisbury Morse Place School -- as an energetic kid who loves riding her bike and "going to dances." "She's fun, outgoing, nice," said Jennifer. "She can be pretty annoying sometimes, but I still love her." Carly is recovering from her injuries at the Children's Hospital intensive care unit, where she's being looked after by her mother, father, and aunts and uncles. Muangxong said she didn't ask Carly about the accident when she talked to her yesterday morning. River East School Division Supt. John Carlyle said the accident highlights the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks. "A little girl almost lost her life," Carlyle said. "We need to continue to talk to kids about safety." A paid crossing guard already patrols the intersection where Carly was hit before and after school and at lunch hour, Carlyle said. In addition, Canadian Pacific Railway sends a representative to schools to lecture kids on the dangers of playing near train tracks. *****************************************************************

RE: STOP!! That's if you want to live..

There's a very simple solution to the problem-eliminate grade crossings. This has already been done on the NEC, and all of the high speed lines in Europe and Japan. Automobiles and trains don't mix, period. I don't care what kind of barrier you have if a big truck is going fast enough, it will get through. Additionally, even with those barriers that lock across the whole road, some idiot drivers will drive off the road to get around them. Too many drivers also have the idiotic idea that they shouldn't be the ones to stop but rather the train should be. They simply can't grasp the concept that a freight train doing 70 mph takes well over a mile to stop, and there is little that can be done to change that. In the end, the costs of automobile(truck)-train collisions in terms of actual damage, lost passengers fearful of accidents, and medical costs form spilled hazardous cargo far outweigh the costs of eliminating grade crossings. I would like to see Congress pass a bill requiring the elimination of all grade crossings within, say, five years. That would also eliminate the noise complaints about trains blowing their horns at crossings.BTW, I think it's strange how people complain about an occasional train horn(which I think adds character to a place), but don't complain about the constant sound of automobile and truck horns(and engines), or about the near constant din from airliners flying overhead in large cities. These are both far more annoying than train horns, and I won't even get into the massive quantities of pollution that autos and planes put out.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-02 AT 06:53 PM (EDT)Hmm, currently Congress may extend the time limit to as much as 15 years to eliminate all grade crossings...With the elimination of grade crossings, it will eliminate the need for such ear-shattering horns (such as the K5LA); and may eliminate the need for horns altogether, except to warn railfans away from the tracks..The trains could probably communicate with each other through a satellite network; would speed up things, save money on expenses (such as fuel waste while idling at a siding waiting for the "Highball"), and let people sleep peacefully at night..
