"Lights to locomotive numbers"
Someone in one of the forums gave me the idea so I experimented and added lights to the locomotive numbers on the Dash9 SantaFe War Bonnet. Its pretty easy and they look geat. I have attached the War Bonnet eng file, these are the only modification I have made. http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b2e9f7229477208.zip....Tony

This looks pretty neat. I have the 3D trainsim version of the warbonnet dash 9 installed. What exactly did you change in the eng file to get this done? I'd like to modify all my dash9's...which is a few...BNSF, Santa Fe, UP, SP, CSX, NS...Eric

Hi Eric, Look in the *.eng file. There are two additionl entries in the "lights" section. Both have a "number" entry in their description. You can just cut and paste both entries to your other Dash eng files. You need to make one other change and that is at the start of the "lights" section. "Lights ( 10" I believe I bumped the entry up to 12.It appears you don't have to have an accurate entry count as long as the number covers you number of "light" entries.I noticed after I uploaded the file that there was a slight overlap issue so you may want to change the radius to a narrower angle. Let me know if this makes sense....Tony

Tried it last night and it crashed MSTS completely. I'd copied & pasted the additonal entries, but didn't change the Lights from 10 to 12. Will try that tonight. On the bright side, I did a full reinstall of MSTS in an attempt to get things back up, and the "unsupported sound card" error message for my Montego II sound card went away, so I gained something from this experience.I did have a backup of the unmodified ENG file, so once I figured out that this was where the problem originated, I used that end everything runs fine.

Actually, what would be neat is if this MSTS buddy software somebody is developing would give some features around convenience like this.1. The ability modify eng files by simple commands... like "activate engine lites"..etc.2. Im also seeing a need for the ability to quickly build consists without having to go through the hassle of the activity editor. Eric

RE: Lights to locomotive numbers
Way to go!! It looks awesome. Question for you though... Can you make the number lights stay on without the headlights on? It would be neat to be driving in the dark and notice the numbers on as you pass locomotives. Just a thoughtWestSlopeRRfan

You could set it up so the number lights came on after dark automatically and not be associated with the light switch.

I modified a file for the number lights to come on at dark, about 7PM, and to come on for all War Bonnet locomotives. I e-mailed you the file, let me know what you think.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b33f29f0a9377e0.zip

Hi, It takes opening the *.eng file with "WordPad", and then editing it. In this case just copying the "number light" entries in the file I posted and pasting them into the other Dash "eng" files. Be carefull, this is only setup for the Dash. First make a copy of the file you want to edit in case there is a problem. Study the number light entry in the eng file, notice the way it is written. When you paste your new entry it has to be exactly the same as the original.Nothing extra and nothing missing. Also notice the first mention of lights in the *.eng file. It will look something like:Lights ( 9The number refers to the light entries that are coded in to the file. Increase the number to cover the total of new entries.Once you get the hang of it, no problem. .Tony

I have a pretty good number of dash9's. Would be AWESOME if somebody could create a little utility that wrote this snippet of code directly to an *.eng file when selected. Could add this to the SD40's and the GP38's as well.Such a util could also be used to update the physics models as well. This would save a lot for the freeware authors who might need to put in updates.Think its time to have a "swiss army knife" app for this game. MSTS buddy is a good candidate if the author wanted to do it.Eric

Here is a modified GP38 file to include both sets of number lights. I took the default GP38 file and added.1) Out side cab view. 2) Corrected second exhaust stack. 3) All number lights will come on at dark. @ 7PM 4) Corrected rear head light positions so you can see them. 5) Headlights now come on in pairs for both dim and bright. 6) From inside the cab there are a dim and medium scenery lighting view beside the default bright view....Tonyhttp://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b35f89a596b6c8c.zip
